Did an extraterrestrial impact trigger the extinction of ice-age animals?

A controversial theory that suggests an extraterrestrial body crashing to Earth almost 13,000 years ago caused the extinction of many large animals and a probable population decline in early humans is gaining traction from research sites around the world.

The Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis, controversial from the time it was presented in 2007, proposes that an asteroid or comet hit the Earth about 12,800 years ago causing a period of extreme cooling that contributed to extinctions of more than 35 species of megafauna including giant sloths, sabre-tooth cats, mastodons and mammoths! Nasa to look for alien tech made by advanced extraterrestrial civilisations | Metro News

It has joined up with the Breakthrough Listen initiative to launch a search for 'technosignatures' – the traces of technology which indicate the existence of 'advanced extraterrestrial civilisations'.

These could include massive structures like Dyson Spheres, which are hypothetical 'megastructures' built around stars to harvest their power.

But technosignatures could be signals which seem to be produced by artificial transmitters or perhaps even the engines of alien spaceships.

The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) drive will utilise the power of the TESS satellite, which is currently searching for planets.

It detects the presence of alien worlds orbiting distant suns by watching a telltale dip in the star's light, indicating a planet's 'transit' in front of it.

Do You Believe Aliens Exist? - The New York Times

In " Area 51 Raid: They Come in Peace, So Far, in Search for Aliens ," Nicholas Bogel-Burroughs writes about the event and its enthusiastic participants. But he also takes on the mystery at the heart of the gathering:

* * *

Seth Shostak is a senior astronomer at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif. (SETI is short for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.) Researchers there are searching for intelligent aliens — ones that "can at least use a radio transmitter," Mr. Shostak said.

As far as the green little guys that some imagine waddle through Area 51's hallways, Mr. Shostak said there was almost no chance. Secrets like that, he said, would get out.

Why do you think conspiracy theories about Area 51 persist despite denials from the American government? Have you ever wondered what goes on there?

Intelligent Ways to Search for Extraterrestrials | The New Yorker

The laws of physics suggest no reason why this plan wouldn't work; they merely require that all the energy collected be radiated out again as heat, lest the whole construction melt. This, in turn, means that your cloud of platforms should softly glow. A distant observer training a telescope on your solar system might see something like a hot, opaque screen encircling a dimmed star—a spherical entity, curiously bright at certain wavelengths.

The theoretical physicist Freeman Dyson first speculated about the existence of such structures in 1960. In the decades since, astronomers on Earth have looked repeatedly for so-called Dyson spheres, and nobody has seen one. There are different ways of interpreting this result! Intelligent Ways to Search for Extraterrestrials ...Intelligent Ways to Search for Extraterrestrials. Adam Mann, The New Yorker October 7, 2019. AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez. Suppose you're a space-faring alien society. You've established colonies on a few planets and moons in your solar system, but your population is growing and you're running out of space. What should you do?!! Jason Wright, an astrophysicist at Pennsylvania State University, told me that Dyson wrote his original paper while contemplating an abstract idea—that "the fundamental limit to an energy supply that a species could have is all of the starlight in their system." The fact that Dyson spheres haven't been found, Wright said, doesn't prove that aliens don't exist! A technology that has enabled ever-faster delivery of voice and data over the Internet and other telecommunications platforms could play a front-and-center role in NASA’s quest to develop a super-small instrument for gathering unprecedented details about extraterrestrial planets, moons, comets, and asteroids.

As good as MILAHI is, it’s too big and heavy to fly on a traditional satellite, let alone a less-expensive CubeSat whose small size and lower cost would allow scientists to fly multiple, similarly equipped platforms for multipoint observations, said Principal Investigator Tony Yu, a technologist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, who recently won technology-development funds from NASA’s Planetary Concepts for the Advancement of Solar System Observations (PICASSO) program to mature a smaller MILAHI-type instrument.

Near-Earth objects could be used by extraterrestrials 'to watch our world,' stunning

Although Earth only has one moon , it does have other natural satellites, including asteroid 2016 HO3, known as a "co-orbital object." These tiny celestial objects could be an "attractive location for extraterrestrial intelligence," according to a new study.

The research suggests that these space rocks could be hiding grounds for an advanced civilization, given their small size and close proximity to the planet.

"These near-Earth objects provide an ideal way to watch our world from a secure natural object," the study's abstract reads . "That provides resources an ETI [extraterrestrial intelligence] might need: materials, a firm anchor, and concealment. These have been little studied by astronomy and not at all by the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) or planetary radar observations."

New evidence that an extraterrestrial collision 12,800 years ago triggered an abrupt climate

In the space of just a couple of years, average temperatures abruptly dropped , resulting in temperatures as much as 14 degrees Fahrenheit cooler in some regions of the Northern Hemisphere. If a drop like that happened today, it would mean the average temperature of Miami Beach would quickly change to that of current Montreal, Canada. Layers of ice in Greenland show that this cool period in the Northern Hemisphere lasted about 1,400 years.

Army partners with former Blink-182 founder’s UFO research company to study alien technology

Much like the universe, the military's affiliation with alien-related subject matter appears to be ever-expanding.

In 2017, the Pentagon confirmed the existence of a program that existed from 2007 to 2012, the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, that was dedicated solely to investigating reports of UFO sightings.

This April, the Navy confirmed it was drafting a fleet-wide message to establish guidelines for pilots and other military personnel to report UFO sightings, the culmination of a surge in what the Navy called a series of intrusions by advanced aircraft on Navy carrier strike groups.

UFO Group Sharing Exotic Materials With Army for Combat Vehicles

The Army is researching whether materials an outside group says were collected from UFOs can be used as cutting-edge technology in combat vehicles, according to interviews and a new research and development agreement.

The exploratory research is being conducted jointly by the new U.S. Army Futures Command and the To The Stars Academy, which has obtained what it says are exotic meta-materials that may have otherworldly origins and useful applications for the military.

The Army command was created last year to spearhead technological innovation and the vehicle research represents the first formal cooperation between the military and the To The Stars Academy of Arts & Science , formed in 2017 by rock musician and UFO believer Tom DeLonge. The group is best known for releasing widely publicized and authenticated Navy fighter jet cockpit videos that appear to show unknown aircraft with baffling flight capabilities.

Alien Research Group Started by Blink-182 Singer Says It's Found 'Exotic UFO Material'

And he apparently now has something to show for it. In a recent Q&A with The New York Times , a reporter asked whether the group had obtained "exotic material samples from UFOs."

It's still unclear what precise materials the Academy has gotten its hands on, and whether they relate in any way to the three videos it obtained of "unidentified aerial phenomena" that a spokesperson for the Navy recently revealed to be legitimate.

Best pictures of the solar system from the decade you were born - Business Insider

For decades, scientists have pointed Earthly lenses toward the sky to capture images of the cosmos. Even the earliest rockets that launched off the planet brought cameras into space.

At first, our photos of the solar system came back grainy, unclear, and colorless. The very first image taken in space, for example, came from a 33mm motion-picture camera that American scientists strapped to a captured German rocket and launched off Earth at the end of World War II. The camera fell back to Earth and shattered, but the film survived.

Other early solar-system images came as NASA and the Soviet Union explored the moon for the first time — people born in the 1950s and 60s grew up with the iconic photos of the first astronauts walking on the moon.

Since then, increasingly sophisticated missions have ventured farther into space with better and better cameras! OK, WHAT I’m about to say may cause some distress. You remember how it was with Pluto? In 2006 , the International Astronomical Union (IAU) voted to downgrade the much-loved ninth planet to a mere dwarf planet . More than a decade later , it seems some people still haven’t gotten over it. But I’m still going to say it: things are getting a little out of hand with the solar system’s moons.

On 7 October, astronomers announced the discovery of 20 moons around Saturn . This took the total number of moons in the solar system to 214. The …

While such images are novel ideas, and while some might wonder if such an alignment would lead to some supernatural event as you see in the movies, it's never going to happen.

* * *

The main reason is because not all the planets are on parallel orbital paths. Some of the orbits are tilted compared to the others.

If such an alignment ever did happen, the gravitational forces reportedly would not affect Earth in any meaningful way. The only two bodies in our solar system big enough or close enough to significantly affect us are the sun and the moon.

This doesn't mean earthlings will never see their seven celestial neighbors sharing the same night sky. The last time it happened was the year 949, according to Science Focus. The next time will be May 6, 2492.

That date will change if astronomers ever identify another planet in our solar system and have to add that to alignment possibilities! Should You Get Solar? A comprehensive guide to Solar. Earth Is Not Unique: New Technique Using Ancient Stars Studies Geochemistry of Planets Outside

“We have just raised the probability that many rocky planets are like the Earth, and there’s a very large number of rocky planets in the universe,” said co-author Edward Young, UCLA professor of geochemistry and cosmochemistry.

“We’re studying geochemistry in rocks from other stars, which is almost unheard of,” Young said.

“Learning the composition of planets outside our solar system is very difficult,” said co-author Hilke Schlichting, UCLA associate professor of astrophysics and planetary science. “We used the only method possible — a method we pioneered — to determine the geochemistry of rocks outside of the solar system.”

Then in August, an amateur astronomer in Crimea found a second interstellar visitor, 2I/Borisov, suggesting that such objects come our way on a regular basis.

Now, scientists are eagerly developing plans to explore these messengers from afar and to learn their secrets.

For now, answers are trickling in slowly from observatories on the ground and in orbit around Earth, including an intriguing new image of Borisov just taken by the Hubble telescope . Come 2028, though, a European spacecraft called Comet Interceptor could be on its way to a brief encounter with another, as-yet-undetected interstellar object.

Hein and his colleagues have an even grander project in mind. They've drawn up plans for Project Lyra , a space probe that could travel fast enough to overtake either 'Oumuamua or Borisov (or another interstellar object) as it speeds its way out of the solar system, reaching either one by the mid-2040s.

How Blink-182's Tom DeLonge Became a U.F.O. Researcher - The New York Times

For decades, the discussion of whether or not U.F.O.s exist has been debated in American pop culture and within science communities.

That all reached a fever pitch last week when the United States Navy confirmed that three widely shared videos captured by naval aviators in 2004 and 2015 were indeed real and showed what it called "unidentified aerial phenomena." The "unidentified" part of that statement sparked excitement among U.F.O. enthusiasts.

Area 51: A deep dive into aliens, UFOs, and conspiracy

The term "UFO" was coined in 1953 by the United States Air Force. Over the years it's come to include many things people have seen in the sky.

For decades, "Area 51" in the deserts of Nevada has been shrouded in mystery with rumors that alien secrets are held inside.

* * *

"It wasn't acknowledged until 2013 that Area 51 truly existed," Barry Lewis Roth with the Colorado Mutual UFO Network said.

In 1955, the CIA was looking for a secure location for to test the Lockheed U-2 spy plane. That location became what is now Area 51.

Nearly a decade earlier in 1946, more than 2,000 sightings were reported worldwide, primarily by Swedish military.

"There was a rancher by the name of Max Brazzle that was checking out the pasture," Roth said. "He came across some debris field that had crashed there! Canadian mint releases UFO-themed glow-in-the-dark coin - BBC News

Over 50 years ago, on the night of 4 October, strange lights appeared over the sky of a small Canadian fishing village.

Witnesses watched as the lights flashed and then dived towards the dark waters off the coast of Nova Scotia.

Now, what some believe to have been a UFO sighting has been commemorated by the Royal Canadian Mint.

* * *

The scene on the glow-in-the-dark coin depicts a specific moment described by various eyewitnesses.

After seeing four strange flashing lights in the offshore night sky, they spotted an object 60-feet in length flying low, which dropped down at a 45 degree angle.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), which had received numerous calls reporting a plane crash in the harbour, along with local fishermen, tried to reach the object before it sank.

Here's a believable explanation of those UFO videos released by the Navy - MarketWatch

Jurica Dujmović says a military patent could explain mysterious objects caught on video by a jet-fighter pilot

Last month the U.S. Navy confirmed that three videos of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) taken by airplane pilots a few years ago are indeed authentic. (Notice we're not saying "unidentified flying object," or UFO.) This means the videos went through the U.S. military, so it can be assumed they have not been computer-generated or altered.

"What we're seeing is ... this transformation away from it being completely reliant upon government agencies like NASA, like Roscosmos, like the [European Space Agency], and it being driven by commercial interests now," the CEO said.

"So, the governments out there are saying, 'Hey, we want to play ball. We want to work with you. Come up with your solutions and we're happy to finance that.' But so much of the spending now is coming from outside the government, so it's a really exciting time for the industry," Chanin said.
