Listen to a couple ideas about humanity's future on the moon and you'll likely hear about the game-changing potential of a substance you probably have in your freezer: water ice.

Would-be explorers have high hopes they can harvest ice hidden below the moon's surface , both for astronauts to drink and to make rocket fuels to make round trips cheaper. But the image of robots tearing up the lunar surface and processing frozen water out from other compounds skips a step in considering resources on the moon. Ice will never be the first resource humans use on the moon, experts emphasized at a recent scientific conference.

The waning, gibbous moon was in conjunction with Jupiter — meaning they shared the same celestial longitude — today at 1:21 p.m. EDT (1721 GMT). It will swing by Saturn just nine hours later, reaching conjunction with the ringed planet at 10:12 p.m. EDT (0212 GMT on Tuesday, June 9).

How SpaceX is Changing Starship to be Able to Land on the Moon - Universe Today

Saturn's largest moon is drifting off into space 100 times faster than

According to NASA , as a moon orbits, its gravity creates a temporary bulge in the planet, causing tides as oceans move from side to side. Over time, the energy created by this interaction transfers from the planet to its moon, pushing it further away. 

While scientists know that Saturn formed 4.6 billion years ago, the details on the formations of its rings and its system of more than 80 moons are less certain. Knowing that Titan is currently 759,000 miles from the planet, this new discovery suggests the whole system expanded relatively quickly.

NASA's Kathy Lueders will lead 2024 moon effort after SpaceX success

The NASA official who oversaw the first SpaceX astronaut launch last month will now lead all the agency's human spaceflight efforts, including its goal to land astronauts on the moon by 2024.

NASA chief Jim Bridenstine on Friday announced that Kathy Lueders was selected as the agency's associate administrator of its Human Exploration & Operations mission directorate. He said in a tweet that Lueders to be "the right person to lead HEO as we prepare to send astronauts to the Moon."

The Nintendo Switch has impressed us with some ports, but others have left a bad taste in our mouths. Deliver Us the Moon may have gone either way, but we will never know. Deliver Us the Moon is available on PC, Xbox One, and PS4. The physical copies for PS4 and Xbox One are still slated for an August 14th release.

New Asteroid with a Tail | Asteroids 2020

If you're an astronomy buff, you've probably heard the age-old adage that asteroids are rocky and comets are icy.

The NASA-funded ATLAS is designed to spot potentially hazardous asteroids rocketing through our solar system. The project employs the use of two sky-scanning telescopes. ATLAS 1 is stationed atop Haleakala volcano in Maui, while ATLAS 2 is positioned atop Mauna Loa volcano on the Big Island.

This latest discovery dates back to observations made in July 2019, when ATLAS images revealed a faint asteroid near Jupiter's orbit. The Minor Planet Center dubbed it 2019 LD2, and it quickly became the subject of additional study. Researchers at Queen's University in Belfast and the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa later took images that revealed the object was likely a comet due to its icy tail.

And like Earth, Vesta is also pummeled by micrometeoroids. The brightest asteroid in the night sky, Vesta orbits the sun in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

The research team focused on small, dark inclusions in Kapoeta that seemed out of place, like pieces of clay in lava rock. "They look completely different from surrounding material," Liu said. They turned out to be microscopic meteoroids, less than 100 microns across (smaller than the thickness of a human hair), that landed on Vesta's surface.

NASA Tracker: 4 Asteroids To Fly Past Earth This Weekend

NASA's automated asteroid tracking system is currently monitoring four near-Earth objects that are expected to fly past the planet this weekend. According to the data collected by the agency, two of the approaching asteroids follow Earth-intersecting orbits.

The asteroids approaching Earth are being tracked by NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS). As noted by CNEOS, three of the four asteroids will enter Earth's vicinity on Saturday (June 13).

16 asteroids are set to fly past Earth in June — one that's more than twice the size of the

Lunar Distance (LD) is the measurement used. It is comparable how far the asteroid will be from the Earth in relation to how far the Moon is from the planet.

An LD of 1 would mean that it will be as close to Earth as the Moon — approximately 384,400 kilometres. An LD of 2 would mean twice as far and an LD of 3 would mean thrice as far. The lower the LD, the closer the asteroid will be to Earth.

It's important to note that while the Centre of Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) tags these asteroids as 'potentially hazardous' — it's only to ensure that someone is keeping an eye on them in case they change trajectory or pose an imminent threat. As on now, all of them — close and far — will be far from Earth and don't pose a risk of actually crashing into the planet.

Don't stop them now: Rocket Lab launches 5 satellites to orbit | Space

Rocket Lab's 12th mission finally got off the ground early this morning (June 13), after a 2.5-month delay caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

A two-stage Electron booster rose off the pad at Rocket Lab's New Zealand launch site at 1:12 a.m. EST (0512 GMT; 5:12 p.m. local New Zealand time), carrying five satellites aloft, including three payloads for the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO).

All five satellites were deployed successfully into their designated orbits, Rocket Lab representatives announced an hour after liftoff.

Texas explorer to become second person ever to orbit space and reach deepest point in ocean |

AUSTIN (Nexstar) — Richard Garriott will be the second person ever to have orbited space, and reach the deepest point in the ocean if everything goes as planned next week.

The Texas video game developer-turned-explorer leaves for Guam early Monday morning, and from there, will depart to the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean. He will dive more than 6 miles underwater at the Challenger Deep, which is at the southern part of the trench.

Garriott went to space as a private astronaut in 2008, on a 12-day mission to the International Space Station.

Titan is drifting away from Saturn 100 times faster than we thought | Space

Saturn's moon Titan is zooming away from its ringed parent 100 times faster than scientists expected.

According to a new study, Saturn's largest moon was "born" fairly close to the planet, but over the course of 4.5 billion years, it has migrated out to where it orbits currently, approximately 746,000 miles (1.2 million kilometers) away from the planet. The Saturnian moon's orbit is now expanding away from Saturn at a rate 100 times faster than scientists had previously predicted.

There are an estimated 2,200 satellites orbiting the Earth at present, but telecommunications companies are launching dozens of new satellites regularly in hopes of providing high-speed broadband internet access to the entire planet.

Not to be left out of the game, Amazon plans to create its own space-based internet system, Project Kuiper, with the launch of more than 3,000 satellites.

That's a lot of satellites that could fill the skies over the next decade. Now would be the time for the formation of an international organization — composed of satellite companies, scientists and government representatives — that would provide some control over how many satellites orbit the Earth.

China's IoT satellites complete phase 1 in-orbit tests - CGTN

Two satellites for China's space-based Internet-of-Things (IoT) project have completed phase 1 tests in orbit, sources with the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation said.

The satellites, Xingyun-2 01 and 02, were launched by a Kuaizhou-1A carrier rocket on May 12 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center.

Additional in-orbit tests will be continued for the completion of the Xingyun project, China's first self-developed, space-based IoT constellation.

Virgin Orbit Launch Attempt Ends Without Trip to Space - The New York Times

Colliding galaxies created the solar system, say astronomers – Physics World

The solar system may have been formed in a long-ago collision between the Milky Way and its orbiting companion the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. That is the conclusion of astrophysicists in Spain, who have analysed data from the Gaia space observatory . This cosmic “fender bender” – which occurred as Sagittarius' orbit plunged it through the plane of our galaxy – helped to concentrate cosmic dust in and usher in a period of heightened star formation.

First identified as a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way in 1994, the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy is around one tenth of the diameter of the Milky Way. Made up of four main globular clusters of stars, our elliptical-shaped neighbour is spiralling around our galaxy on a polar orbit about 50,000 light-years from the galactic core. This brought the galaxy through the plane of the Milky Way several times in the past.

Solar industry warns new plan 'devastate' rooftop solar

Saturn's moon Titan is rapidly migrating away from the planet

CNN – Titan, Saturn's largest moon, is moving away from its planet a hundred times faster than previously established, according to a new study.

The giant moon isn't alone in this behavior; other moons among the 150 known moons in our solar system are also slowly distancing themselves from the planets they orbit, including our own moon. Earth's moon moves about 1.5 inches away each year, according to NASA .

This is caused by the moon's gravity tugging on the planet, which creates a temporary bulge in the planet. That energy pushes the moon further away.

Yet but for the musician's chance encounter with it, his name might very well remain unknown to all but the most astute music historians. Instead, the name Gustav Holst is familiar to legions of music fans around the world thanks to the seven-part orchestral suite he wrote after reading the book, called simply, The Planets.

During the first two decades of his professional career, Gustav wrote several, mostly pedestrian, musical pieces. But in 1914, influenced by Leo's astrology claims, as well as the music of Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg in his Five Pieces for Orchestra, he began composing a seven-movement orchestral piece he initially called Seven Pieces for Large Orchestra. He soon changed the name to The Planets.

A 2nd Planet has been Confirmed for Proxima Centauri - Universe Today

Our closest stellar neighbour is Proxima Centauri, a small red dwarf star about 4.2 light years away from us. It’s the third member of the Alpha Centauri group, and even though it’s so close, it can’t be seen with the naked eye. In 2016 astronomers discovered a planet orbiting Proxima Centuari, named Proxima Centauri b. That planet was confirmed only a few days ago.

The presence of this second planet was reported in a paper back in April. That paper is titled “ A Preliminary Mass for Proxima Centauri C * .” It was published in Research Notes of the AAS. Fritz Benedict, lead author of the work, recently presented these results at the 236th meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

Astronomers Discover Star And Planet Strikingly Similar to The Sun And Earth

Scientists have found a potentially habitable exoplanet and its star that are more similar to the Earth and our Sun than any other known planet-star pair.

"It's the combination of this less-than-double the size of the Earth planet and its solar type host star that make it so special and familiar," René Heller, the lead author of the new study, said in a press release .

Her team at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research described the planet and star in a paper published last week in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics .

Such a case is apparent with the star, V1298 Tau. A group of scientists has recently found out that the star was causing four of its young exoplanets to "shrink" due to its continuous "roasting" on the baby planets. Scientists believe that eventually, the tiny celestial bodies would be reduced into nothing but a core.

In the study, the authors wanted to figure out how much young stars disturb other planets' atmosphere over some time. Furthermore, when searching for habitability among exoplanets, scientists usually check on the atmosphere first as it needs to be thick enough for the transference of heat and providence of insulation.

Hitching a ride with SpaceX, Planet poised to complete SkySat fleet – Spaceflight Now

Mike Safyan, Planet’s vice president of launch, said SpaceX’s small satellite rideshare service, which the launch provider announced last year , was “a very attractive offering” to launch the company’s last six SkySat satellites.

While Safyan would not disclose what Planet paid SpaceX to launch the six SkySats, SpaceX has published pricing for rideshare launch services on its website. The company lists a price as low as $1 million for a 440-pound payload on a rideshare to a polar sun-synchronous orbit.

Stationary 'UFO' recorded over South Carolina ignites offbeat conspiracy theories

SOUTH CAROLINA (Mark Price/Charlotte Observer) - Video of a comet-like object reportedly seen over South Carolina has found its way to YouTube, resulting in an increasingly strange series of conspiracy theories and wild guesses.

It shows something streaking across the sky, but the object appears to be stationary. Meanwhile, what seems to be a passing aircraft flies behind it, and their white trails cross about one minute into the video.

Among the theories is the second craft was a government "spotter plane" sent to investigate a potential UFO.

Mysterious lights hovering over Mesa skies Sunday night puzzle residents

MESA, AZ — Mysterious lights hovering above the east Valley have many wondering if we've had a close encounter.

"It was pretty bright, it was about straight up over here, and it went straight that way, stopped, and it didn't seem like it was too far," said DJ Maier and Kerri Burnett, describing what they saw.

The couple says they spotted the phenomenon outside their Mesa home on Sunday around nine that night.

"It started moving kind of diagonal across, I was trying to figure out which way it was heading, and that's when we noticed it started dropping things from it," said Burnett.

'What is that, man?' Navy confirms videos of flying objects

NORFOLK, Va. — In one of the videos, a small object streaks across the sky before the U.S. Navy fighter jet's tracking system locks on and follows it.

The Navy isn't offering an explanation — at least not publicly — for exactly what that object was. But the service is confirming the authenticity of that video and two others taken from its planes in 2004 and 2015.

The release of the videos, which have been circulating online a nd in news reports , was not authorized, Navy officials said. But the footage has prompted the Navy to publicly discuss an ongoing investigation into sightings by its pilots of what it describes as "unidentified aerial phenomena" or UAPs in U.S. airspace on both coasts.
