He said: "I was sat down watching my daughter and friends play when I saw this crazy thing in the sky. I looked up and there it was in front of me. It was moving quite fast and at first I thought it was a shooting star as it was too high to be a drone and too close to be a plane.

Anyone with children knows that while controlling one child can be hard, controlling many at once can be nearly impossible. Getting swarms of robots to work collectively can be equally challenging, unless researchers carefully choreograph their interactions -- like planes in formation -- using increasingly sophisticated components and algorithms. Sophia, who has appeared onstage at a multitude of technology conferences and even appeared on "The Tonight Show," is one of the world's best-known androids — robots designed to appear humanlike. Sophia can now carry on a conversation, offer a range of facial expressions and even high-five.
Hanson designed the robot in 2016 and has been improving the technology ever since. Last month, a piece of art Sophia co-created was auctioned for $688,000 — the first time an artwork created by a robot has been sold.

A Hong Kong professor has developed an educational programme using role-playing robots to help children with autism improve their social skills, part of an initiative adopted by non-profit groups and schools.
The programme, Robot for Autism Behavioral Intervention (RABI), is designed for people with autism between the ages of 3 and 18, and aims to help them be more social and to resolve issues such as conflicts and bullying.
The retailer is phasing out the hulking automated pickup towers that were erected in more than 1,500 stores to dispense online orders. The decision reflects a growing focus on curbside pickup services that have become more popular during the Covid-19 pandemic and continues a broader retreat from some initiatives to use highly visible automation in stores.
Over the past year Walmart has started to remove or turn off the 17-foot-tall machines often placed at the front of stores. About 300 machines are being removed from stores, and around 1,300 "hibernated" while Walmart focuses on other services, said Larry Blue, chief executive of Bell & Howell, a Durham, N.C.-based automation services company that installed and maintains the devices for the retailer.

The Pentagon has confirmed the legitimacy of newly-leaked photos and videos of a UFO, revealing that it was filmed by US Navy personnel in 2019.
Sue Gough, a spokesperson for The Defense Department, told CNN : "As we have said before, to maintain operations security and to avoid disclosing information that may be useful to potential adversaries, The Department of Defense does not discuss publicly the details of either the observations or the examinations of reported incursions into our training ranges or designated airspace, including those incursions initially designated as unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP)."

The Lyrid meteor shower will be visible all day on Thursday, with astronomers predicting a peak at around 1pm. Tania de Sales Marques, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, told the PA news agency: “Since the peak occurs during the day the best time to try to spot the shower will be before sunrise on the 22nd or after sunset.
Ms de Sales Marques added that because the Moon will be at a waxing gibbous phase, there will be quite bright in the sky meaning conditions “won't be very favourable”.

Elon Musk's SpaceX launched its third crewed rocket for NASA, sending a further four astronauts into orbit and marking the first time the company achieved the takeoff with both a pre-used capsule and rocket.

Every few years, NASA creates Space Technology Research Institutes (STRI) in areas it believes are going to be strategic for future technology and space missions. Today, that area is electric propulsion - the use of electrical energy to accelerate propellant to create thrust. The technology yields extremely efficient thrusters to power space flight for gateway launches to the moon or even shuttling massive loads of cargo to Mars.

Kansas elementary students take part in ISS plant growing experiment
Basehor-Linwood elementary schools are taking advantage of Linwood Elementary School teacher Lisa Turney's role as an Astro_moji mission specialist working with a science experiment currently taking place at the International Space Station.
Turney was selected from more than 550,000 participants to virtually teach about a science experiment involving red clover being grown 250 miles above Earth on the ISS.
Those seeds were sent via the NG-15 Cargo Resupply Mission which launched Feb. 20 and will return in May. The purpose of the experiment is to achieve effective plant growth in space for long-term space travel, including a potential colonization of Mars.

NASA’s Perseverance rover just notched another first on Mars, one that may help pave the way for astronauts to explore the Red Planet someday.
The rover successfully used its MOXIE instrument to generate oxygen from the thin, carbon dioxide-dominated Martian atmosphere for the first time, demonstrating technology that could both help astronauts breathe and help propel the rockets that get them back home to Earth.
The MOXIE milestone occurred on Tuesday (April 20), just one day after Perseverance watched over another epic Martian first—the first Mars flight of NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter , which rode to the Red Planeton the rover’s belly.

NASA has pulled off the first powered flight on another world. Ingenuity, the robot rotorcraft that is part of the agency's Perseverance mission, lifted off from the surface of Mars on 19 April, in a 39.1-second flight that is a landmark in interplanetary aviation.
"We can now say that human beings have flown a rotorcraft on another planet," says MiMi Aung, the project's lead engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California.

In a new study, scientists at Brown University took a look at the peculiar ridges and geological features of this crater that were visible in imagery from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter .
According to their paper , published March 12 in the Planetary Science Journal, the team noticed that these formations are different from those found in other craters. While all the craters in the scope of their comparative analysis had signs that water once flowed within them, the unnamed crater showed no signs that water breached the wall of the crater to get inside. There was also no evidence that groundwater was the source of the ridges inside the crater, they found.
