Watch as the Moon blots out bright stars – Astronomy Now

Watching a bright star disappearing or reappearing from occultation behind the Moon's limb is always an exciting observation to make.

On 1/2 September (Wednesday evening/Thursday morning), Mebsuta (epsilon Geminorum) takes centre stage, reappearing at the Moon's dark limb.

In the early hours of 2 September, the Moon is a waning, 24.5-day-old crescent when it rises in Gemini at about 12.30am BST.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- NASA has cut a 10 cent check to space startup Lunar Outpost in the first-ever payment to a company to mine the moon .

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson presented Justin Cyrus, CEO of Colorado-based space startup Lunar Outpost, with the first payment ever issued to a company as part of a space resource contract announced Aug. 23 here at the 36th annual Space Symposium.

Mike Moon announces run for U.S. 7th congressional district seat

Heading to the moon | Sault Star

Stardust Technologies, President and CEO Jason Michaud announced recently that his company, in a coordinated effort with ispace inc, the University of Sydney and EXPLOR Space Technologies, have signed a collective Memorandum of Understand (MoU).

These companies will collaborate on a lunar rover equipped with a robotic arm using mixed reality and haptic feedback to conduct resource extraction activities on the moon.

US (FL): Library wins 'Plant the Moon Challenge'

The Hugh Embry Library's effort to grow plants in simulated lunar soil took home a big prize in the Plant the Moon Challenge, according to a press release from Pasco County. The branch's Project Moonraker took home "Best in Show: Evaluation of Results."

"Our team is blown away and very thankful for such a wonderful opportunity to bring science to our little Dade City community, as well as the positive press to Pasco County Library System," the release said.

But, just so everyone is clear, UMG does not actually own footage of our nearest celestial neighbor. The person who filmed the footage, filmmaker Philip Bloom, is understandably not pleased.

A new experiment, by researchers at Southern Methodist University, aimed to do so by mimicking the conditions of Titan in a test tube. Titan seems alien, but it shares many organic molecules with our planet. But it's a much colder place.

RunĨevski's "Titan-in-a-glass" aimed to do just that. The team combined features of Titan, such as its plunging temperatures and characteristic liquids, within glass cylinders. Then, they added two molecules, acetonitrile and propionitrile, present in the moon's atmosphere.

Deflecting an asteroid before it hits Earth may take multiple bumps | The Seattle Times

There's probably a large space rock out there, somewhere, that has Earth in its crosshairs. Scientists have, in fact, spotted one candidate: Bennu, which has a small chance of banging into our planet in the year 2182.

Geologists propose theory about a famous asteroid

The asteroid Vesta is the second largest asteroid in our solar system. With a diameter of about 330 miles, it orbits the sun between the planets Mars and Jupiter.

Asteroids have long played a part in building popular fascination with space. “Marooned off Vesta” was the first story published by American writer Isaac Asimov, the third story he wrote, appearing in the March 1939 issue of the science fiction magazine Amazing Stories.

Statisticians put odds of asteroid Bennu hitting Earth into perspective – Harvard Gazette

Recently NASA updated its forecast of the chances that the asteroid Bennu, one of the two most hazardous known objects in our solar system, will hit Earth in the next 300 years. New calculations put the odds at 1 in 1,750, a figure slightly higher than previously thought.

Astronomer recruiting volunteers in effort to quadruple number of known active asteroids –

The study of active asteroids is a relatively new field of solar system science, focusing on objects that have asteroid-like orbits but look more like comets, with visual characteristics such as tails.

Because finding an active asteroid is such a rare event, fewer than 30 of these solar system bodies have been found since 1949, so there is still much for scientists to learn about them.

SpaceX launches Dragon cargo capsule to space station, nails rocket landing at sea | Space

China's Mars rover to pause for about 50 days due to communication disruption: Official - The

China's Tianwen-1 Mars mission will be inactivated for about 50 days from mid-September due to an expected disruption of its communication with Earth caused by the solar electromagnetic radiation, the mission's chief designer has said.

Tianwen-1, consisting of an orbiter, a lander and a rover, was launched on July 23, 2020. It was the first step in China's planetary exploration of the solar system, with the aim of completing orbiting, landing and roving on the red planet in one mission.

Hurricane Ida was spotted swirling above the Gulf of Mexico by astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS).

Photos published online by NASA show the huge storm as seen from space on August 28. In one of the images the ISS appears to be positioned almost directly over the storm's eye, providing a bird's-eye view down through its center.

New Delhi: Scientists have discovered a new asteroid that orbits the Sun once every 113 days, making it the asteroid with the shortest known orbital period.

Researchers Might Have Found Suspicious Planet 9 in Solar System - Technology Times

If Planet 9 is out there, here's where to look

In the case of Planet 9, we don't have any gravitational effect on a planet. What we do see is an odd clustering of small icy bodies in the outer solar system known as Kuiper belt objects (KBOs).

Back in 2016, the authors looked at the statistical distribution of KBOs and concluded the clustering was caused by an undetected outer planet. Based on their calculations, this world has a mass of five Earths and is about 10 times more distant from the sun than Neptune.
