Edmonton weather: Did someone turn off the summer switch? | Edmonton Journal

What happened? I leave town for a couple of days and return to, what can only be described as, fall-like weather? There is a chill in the air and I'm not sure I'm happy about it. It felt like someone turned off the summer switch.

I noticed as we were driving home that some of the leaves had started to change colours. I wanted to think it was early because it has been so hot and dry this year but it seems as if it might just be a sign that summer is starting to fade into fall.

Scottish Mortgage – Are 3D printed rockets the future of space travel? - QuotedData

A trip to Mars may not be high on the average person's to-do list, but Scottish Mortgage is prepared to embrace the radical thinkers and their companies striving to get us there.

Civilisation on Mars might seem far-fetched. For Scottish Mortgage, however, we believe we must embrace seemingly unreasonable propositions to discover the most extraordinary companies.

Space travel: The new version of the old-fashioned Grand Tour?: Travel Weekly

It was a rite of passage for young and wealthy British men from the mid-1600s to the mid-1800s.

But technology, in the form of trains and steamships, did the Grand Tour in. Once commoners (and, good heavens, women!) could, on an affordable Thomas Cook package, duplicate the experience en masse, it lost its appeal.

How can we take pictures of Earth-like exoplanets? Use the sun! | Space

Even the biggest telescopes on Earth can't come close to resolving the nearest known Earth-like exoplanet to us, Proxima b . If we ever want to take pictures of a distant world like this, we need to think bigger.

One way would be to use the sun . The gravity of the sun bends space around it, and that bending is capable of deflecting the path of light. At just the right distance, the sun could act as a giant magnifying lens, providing the resolving power needed to image an exoplanet.

New Space Race Shoots for Moon and Mars on a Budget - The Washington Post

The first space race was a competition between the U.S. and the Soviet Union for national pride and military advantage. Now NASA is farming out missions to private companies, and other countries have joined the race — notably China and India.

Since the space shuttle program ended in 2011, NASA, as the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration is better known, had relied on Russia to ferry U.S. astronauts to the International Space Station, which has orbited Earth for two decades.
