Manta rays could be getting the lift they need from technology after all. An innovation developed by a University of Auckland PhD student has the potential of helping scientists monitor endangered manta rays.

Improved monitoring can help scientists to better gauge the health of manta ray populations in the face of overfishing and climate change. The problem is manta rays are particularly hard to monitor. That is where a pioneering study by a University of Auckland postgraduate student came in handy.

The Record Delta | Odd Holidays: Near Miss Day

Near Miss Day, although rather obscure, is celebrated yearly on March 23. The holiday commemorates the day that a large asteroid, named Asclepius, barely missed Earth on Thursday, March 23, 1989.

Asclepius had a diameter of .0431 kilometers, comparable to the size of a football field. According to nationaltoday.com, many geophysicists believe that the collision of Asclepius with the Earth would have wreaked havoc, resulting in the release of energy comparable to a 600-megaton atomic bomb.

NASA Announces 5,000 Exoplanets Discovered | Time

T ime was, there were only nine known planets in the entire universe—the gaggle of worlds that orbit our sun. That local number was reduced to eight in 2006, when the International Astronomical Union busted Pluto down to a dwarf planet.

The majority of the discoveries were made by the Kepler Space Telescope. Launched in 2009, it hunts for planets using the so-called transit method—looking for the slight dimming in light that occurs when an orbiting planet briefly blocks the light from the star.
