Predicting equatorial plasma bubbles with SWA | EurekAlert!

image: Map of Equatorial Plasma Bubble (EPB) events across the Earth. Most bubbles occur over the Atlantic in a region called the 'South Atlantic Anomaly'. Here high energy particles and gamma rays penetrate deep into our atmosphere and influence the creation of bubbles.

Changes in atmospheric density after sunset can cause hot pockets of gas called ‘plasma bubbles’ to form over the Earth’s equator, resulting in communication disruptions between satellites and the Earth.

Robots trained on AI exhibited racist and sexist behavior - The Washington Post

As part of a recent experiment, scientists asked specially programmed robots to scan blocks with peoples' faces on them, then put the "criminal" in a box. The robots repeatedly chose a block with a Black man's face.

Those virtual robots, which were programmed with a popular artificial intelligence algorithm, were sorting through billions of images and associated captions to respond to that question and others, and may represent the first empirical evidence that robots can be sexist and racist, according to ...

Deformable pump gives soft robots a heart -- ScienceDaily

Now, a collaboration between Cornell researchers and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory has leveraged hydrodynamic and magnetic forces to drive a rubbery, deformable pump that can provide soft robots with a circulatory system, in effect mimicking the biology of animals.

"These distributed soft pumps operate much more like human hearts and the arteries from which the blood is delivered," said Rob Shepherd, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering in the College of Engineering, who led the Cornell team.

Why Delivery Robots Could Leave Driverless Cars in the Dust | Inc.com

Autonomous delivery via self-driving cars, on the other hand, is likely further off. Development of the technology has been a slow process, as the machines have continued to plague developers with crashes, sudden stops, and other unforeseen events on the road.

While A.I. hasn't advanced enough to not pose a risk to drivers, the technology is always advancing. In July 2022, a group of researchers at Google's Deepmind program published a study stating that they had developed an A.I.

How Long Does It Take Solar Panels to Pay For Themselves? – Review Geek

If you’re considering installing solar panels on your home, you likely have several questions. Many potential buyers will wonder if solar is worth it or will solar panels eventually pay for themselves. The answer to both questions is yes.

The idea of installing solar panels on your roof is likely exciting. A door-to-door salesperson will promise low monthly electric bills, tons of savings in the long run, and added value to your home. That said, it’s also a significant investment that’ll take years to develop fully.

Best telescopes for seeing planets | Space

Our planetary neighborhood is a fascinating place, with each world exhibiting its own unique identity. Whether it's the phases of Venus , great storms in the Jovian cloud tops, or the enchanting rings of Saturn , there's so much variety to enjoy.

When shopping on a budget, there's an argument to be made for choosing a smaller refracting telescope than a similarly priced but larger reflector, because the secondary mirrors and struts in Newtonian telescopes perturb the incoming light in a way that reduces image contrast.

Probing Hostile Planets | National Air and Space Museum

Planetary exploration is fraught with peril. Spacecraft—let alone humans—face a dramatic range of conditions, from airless worlds bombarded by tiny meteorites to environmental extremes. Even space itself poses risks. Spacecraft must sometimes endure intense radiation or extreme solar heat.

Before space travel, scientists knew little about what lay beyond Earth's atmosphere. The hazards of radiation and speeding particles could only be estimated from ground-based or high-altitude observations.
