Aurorae throughout our solar system and beyond | Astronomy.com

Both inside and outside the solar system, aurorae light up the skies of planets, moons, and a variety of other celestial objects.

For example, the Sun's solar wind, which is packed with charged particles, washes over Earth and our protective magnetic shield, the magnetosphere.

"The magnetotail is like a cooker that accelerates electrons from Earth's space and dumps them into the polar regions," Eftyhia Zesta, a space physicist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, tells Astronomy.

Quaoar Had One ‘Impossible’ Ring, Then Astronomers Found Two - The New York Times

Earlier this year, astronomers announced that a tiny world beyond Neptune with a diameter about one-third that of Earth's moon possessed a Saturn-like ring that should not be there. It now turns out that there are two such "impossible" rings.

"It was a big surprise," said Chrystian Luciano Pereira, a doctoral student at the National Observatory in Brazil who led the observations of the world, known as Quaoar. "This implies that Quaoar is a more complex system than we initially thought."

The Tail on This Bizarre, Comet-Like Asteroid Isn't Quite What Anybody Expected : ScienceAlert

Every orbit, as it approaches the Sun and heats up, 3200 Phaethon grows a comet-like tail of material, which streams away in a pale fog.

Phaethon's tail was thought to consist of tiny grains of dust , but new observations reveal that's not the case. Rather, the asteroid belches out sodium gas – just like the planet Mercury , but smaller.

Why delivery robots face a regulatory ‘nightmare’ | Supply Chain Dive

Laws for sidewalk-roaming bots have taken hold across states. But variances in each bill complicate the industry's expansion plans.

Bots as heavy as 500 pounds can roam as fast as 4 miles per hour on Georgia sidewalks under state laws. In New Hampshire, robots can travel up to 10 miles per hour on sidewalks, but they can't weigh more than 80 pounds.

The stereotypical ways zombies defeat the military in cinema

In reality, a military base or quarantine zone would be extremely safe. Slow, rotting corpses wouldn't stand a chance against the sheer firepower of the U.S. military. However, that doesn't make for compelling cinema.

Despite the military's epic arsenal — including everything from pistols to nuclear bombs — there is nothing that can keep a platoon from being overcome by a horde of flesh-eating former civilians.
