Bus-sized asteroid to buzz past Earth today

Last Saturday (October 7, 2023), astronomers using the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope at Haleakala, Hawaii, discovered a bus-sized asteroid headed in the direction of Earth.

The asteroid is approximately 20 to 60 foot (6 to 18 meters) in diameter.

The asteroid won’t be visible to the eye. And it won’t have any effects on Earth when it passes us at about 42,000 miles (67,500 km) away (the moon averages about 238,800 miles (328,000 km) from Earth).

Planet collision explains star’s brightening, then dimming | Ars Technica

Planet collision explains star's brightening, then dimming | Ars Technica

Planet formation is thought to be a messy process, as lots of growing planets end up in unstable orbits, resulting in large collisions like the one that resulted in the Moon's formation.

All the evidence for these collisions, however, is indirect or the product of modeling. Planetary migrations are too slow for us to track them, and we can't image planets that are close enough to their stars for collisions to be likely.

AI Designs Little Robots in 30 Seconds and They Keep Sprouting Legs - Scientific American

Artificial intelligence can design an autonomous robot in 30 seconds flat on a laptop or smartphone.

It’s not quite time to panic about just anybody being able to create the Terminator while waiting at the bus stop: as reported in a recent study, the robots are simple machines that scoot along in straight lines without doing more complex tasks.

Scientists Find Evidence for Large Unknown Objects in Distant Solar System

There may be more than meets the eye with The Kuiper Belt, a ring comprising thousands of large, icy objects and dwarf planets that encircle our solar system.

A yet-to-be-published study, spotlighted by Science , found evidence of a dozen large objects lying past the belt's outermost perimeter, suggesting that the belt is much deeper than once thought.

Two giant planets collided and vaporised in a distant star system | New Scientist

A star system 1800 light years from our own may have been the scene of a cataclysmic collision, as two giant planets crashed together and were incinerated, leaving behind a glowing-hot doughnut. It is the first time we have seen a planetary collision, and its aftermath, as it happened.

WATCH: NASA scientists unveil first near-Earth asteroid sample returned to U.S. | PBS NewsHour

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA on Wednesday showed off its first asteroid samples delivered last month by a spacecraft — the most ever returned to Earth.

The ancient black dust and chunks are from the carbon-rich asteroid named Bennu, almost 60 million miles away. NASA’s Osiris-Rex spacecraft collected the samples three years ago and then dropped them off sealed in a capsule during a flyby of Earth last month.

NASA’s Bennu Asteroid Sample Contains Carbon, Water - NASA

This finding was part of a preliminary assessment of NASA's OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification and Security – Regolith Explorer) science team.

Although more work is needed to understand the nature of the carbon compounds found, the initial discovery bodes well for future analyses of the asteroid sample.

Regulators cast more clouds over California solar market | KPBS Public Media

California regulators are poised to shake up the solar market for the state's apartments, schools and farms.

An administrative law judge is proposing changes that critics say make the economics of investing in solar projects unappealing.

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) rewrote the net energy metering (NEM) rules for solar on single-family homes last year and could do the same for bigger complexes that have one solar array with multiple metered hookups.

AI-based algorithm uses "compressed evolution" to create functional robots

AI-based algorithm uses "compressed evolution" to create functional robots

Evolution is a very slow process, due largely to the fact that nature doesn't "know" in advance which features of an animal will be beneficial. A new AI-based algorithm does know, however, allowing it to design purpose-specific robots within a matter of seconds.

The algorithm was developed by a team of American scientists led by Northwestern University's Asst. Prof. Sam Kriegman.
