Mars plays shepherd to our moon's long-lost twin, scientists find

A team including scientists from Italy, Bulgaria and the US and led by the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium (AOP) in Northern Ireland has been studying the Trojans of Mars to understand what they tell us about the early history of the inner worlds of our solar system—the so-called terrestrial planets—but also to inform searches for Trojans of the Earth.

To find out the composition of the Mars Trojans, the team used X-SHOOTER, a spectrograph mounted on the European Southern Observatory 8-m Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile. X-SHOOTER looks at how the surface of the asteroid reflects sunlight of different colors—its reflectance spectrum.

SpaceX plan for own legal regime on Mars is dubious: space law expert - Business Insider

Though this may sound like a page taken out of a sci-fi novel, Elon Musk's aerospace company has indicated its intentions to do just that in two recent and remarkable posts.

"You can come up with many interesting examples where you have people trying to call themselves a state and not being recognized," von der Dunk told Business Insider.

Space.com is going to 'Mars' on a HI-SEAS habitat simulation | Space

A group of six researchers will embark on a mission to "Mars" on Monday (Nov. 2). The Martian crew will include artists, scientists and ... me!

The crew will spend two-weeks traveling to a simulated Mars habitat. The mission, known as Sensoria M2, will take place at the HI-SEAS (Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation) habitat on the side of the volcano Mauna Loa. All crew members will have completed a two-week quarantine and COVID-19 tests prior to flying to the habitat to reduce risk as Sensoria M2 is taking place during the coronavirus pandemic.

MEDLI2 is a collection of sensors that will measure aerothermal environments and thermal protection system material performance during the atmospheric entry phase of the Mars 2020 mission.

The event that happens about every two years is called "opposition" in astronomy terms: the sun and Mars on opposite sides of Earth. From the earthling's perspective, according to NASA , Mars rises in the east just as the sun sets in the west, and would stay up in the sky the whole night, setting in the west just as the sun rises.

When it comes to our understanding of the Universe, the 20th century was full of surprises. A little over 100 years ago, we thought that the Milky Way galaxy was home to everything we could see in the sky. We thought the Universe was static, unchanging, and possibly eternal, governed by Newton's law of universal gravitation.

Gravitational-wave treasure trove reveals dozens of black hole crashes | Space

Although physicists only observed the first of these cosmic "chirps" in 2015, subsequent improvements in the detectors have opened up more and more of these signals to scientific study.

Astronomers claim to have found the Moon's 'long-lost twin' | Daily Mail Online

The 3,280-foot-wide asteroid called (101429) 1998 VF31 was first spotted 22 years ago, and new analysis reveals it is 'strikingly similar' to the moon.

Scientists from the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium (AOP) in Northern Ireland used the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) and the Very Large Telescope (VLT) to study the space rock.

The lead author of the study, Dr Apostolos Christou from the AOP, believes it is possibly a chunk of moon that was dislodged by an enormous impact during the Solar System's formative years, around four billion years ago.

New mineral from the moon could explain what happens in the Earth's mantle

The meteorite is compositionally similar to rocks comprising the Earth's continents. Eroded sediments from these continents are transported by wind and rivers to the oceans, and subducted into the Earth's mantle as part of the dense oceanic crust. Once dragged to depths of about 460-700 km, their constituent minerals transform at high pressures and high temperatures existing at those depths into denser mineral phases, including the newly discovered mineral donwilhelmsite.

Around 382 kilograms of rocks and soils have been collected by the Apollo and Luna missions, lunar meteorites allow valuable insights into the formation and evolution of the moon. Ejected by impacts onto the lunar surface and subsequently delivered to Earth, some of these meteorites experienced particularly high temperatures and pressures.

NASA OSIRIS-REX Mission Springs Leak After Touching Asteroid - The New York Times

NASA's effort to grab a piece of an asteroid on Tuesday may have worked a little too well. The spacecraft, OSIRIS-REX, grabbed so much rock and dirt that some of the material is now leaking back into space.

A few rocks wedged in the robotic probe's collection mechanism prevented a flap from fully closing. In images taken by the spacecraft, scientists could see bits of asteroid coming out. Dr. Lauretta estimated that each image showed about 5 to 10 grams — up to about a third of an ounce — of material floating around the collector. That is a significant loss as the mission's aim is to bring back at least 60 grams of asteroid dirt and rocks.

2 small asteroids zip by Earth closer than the moon today | Space

Two small asteroids will fly by Earth today (Oct. 19) at a range that's closer than the moon, a space rock double flyby that comes as NASA gears up for an asteroid encounter of its own.

The asteroids 2020 UX and 2020 TF6, both discovered in the last week, will be less than half the distance of Earth's moon (when they pass by today, but pose little threat to our planet. The moon, on average, is about 239,000 miles (385,000 kilometers) from Earth.

Neil deGrasse Tyson: US election day asteroid could hit Earth | South Wales Argus

AS IF 2020 hasn't been traumatic enough, an asteroid could hit Earth on the eve of the US Presidential Election on Tuesday.

The asteroid, named 2018VP1, measures just under two metres and poses no threat to Earth, but is a reminder that given the thousands of bodies that orbit near to the the planet, some could and do strike us.

Astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse Tyson, commented that the fridge-sized asteroid, discovered by the Palomar Observatory in California, may 'buzz-cut' the Earth on Tuesday, November 2.

One instrument, with which it is possible to study red dwarfs and their planets closely, is the Mexico-based SAINT-EX telescope, co-operated by the NCCR PlanetS. SAINT-EX is an acronym that stands for Search And characterIsatioN of Transiting EXoplanets. The project has been named in honor of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (Saint-Ex), the famous writer, poet and aviator.

The SAINT-EX Observatory is a fully robotic facility hosting a 1-meter telescope. It is equipped with instrumentation specifically suited to enable high-precision detection of small planets orbiting cool stars. Now, this specialization pays off: earlier this year, the telescope was able to detect two exoplanets orbiting the star TOI-1266, located around 120 light years from Earth.

Elon Musk, SpaceX aims to make fast satellite internet through Starlink network

Typical satellite internet services offer slow speeds and high-latency because of the limitations of traditional satellite networks that are far away from the earth.

The more important spec being publicized is their much lower latency of 20-40 millisecond vs. the typical 500-700 milliseconds from existing satellite internet services.

Think of low latency as fewer stoplights on a trip through town. Driving a 200 mph Ferrari that has to constantly stop at stoplights will take longer than a smart car that takes an alternative route with far fewer stoplights.

Musk: SpaceX's Starlink has enough orbiting satellites for public beta - Business Insider

Elon Musk's goal of beaming high-speed internet to remote parts of Earth using orbiting satellites just got a step closer to reality.

"Once these satellites reach their target position, we will be able to roll out a fairly wide public beta in northern US & hopefully southern Canada," he tweeted after the launch.

'Pristine' meteorite may provide clues to the origins of our solar system

Less than two days after it streaked across the sky, meteorite hunter Robert Ward found the first piece resting on the frozen surface of Strawberry Lake near Hamburg, Michigan. He was able to pinpoint the location by using NASA's weather radar, as the meteorite chunks were similar in size to hail. He quickly got it to the Field Museum in Chicago, where curator Philipp Heck quickly set about studying it.

The researchers determined that it was a rare H4 chondrite meteorite, representing only four percent of those found on Earth. The initial analysis determined that it contained over 2,600 separate organic compounds that were still intact despite the intense heat created when it blazed through the atmosphere. They also found that it likely broke off 12 million years ago from its parent asteroid, which formed 4.5 billion years earlier.

They rummaged around the solar system for millions of years and were the responsible for Late Heavy Bombardment from about 3.8 billion years ago when asteroids rained down on Earth.

They have the same rocky body of an asteroid, while they emit gas and vapour in their tale, known as a coma, much like a comet.

Get ready for the 'Great Conjunction' of Jupiter and Saturn | Space

All through the summer and into the fall, the two gas giants of the solar system, Jupiter and Saturn, have been calling attention to themselves in the southern evening sky.

Jupiter of course, always appears brilliant and is usually one of the brightest nighttime objects, but in recent months it has stood out even more than usual because of the presence of bright Saturn trailing just off to its left (east).

Appearing about one-twelfth as bright, Saturn has, in a way, served as Jupiter's "lieutenant" in this year of 2020.
