Dark matter could warm the hearts of lonely old planets, scientists predict | Science | AAAS

Dark matter might be raising the temperature of planets outside our Solar System, a pair of physicists predicts. Space telescopes already in the works should be able to spot the effect, they say, potentially enabling scientists to trace how the mysterious stuff is distributed within our Milky Way Galaxy.

"In science, we rarely get a brand-new idea," says Sara Seager, a planetary scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who was not involved in the work. "So, I think it's great to see this overlapping intersection of dark matter and exoplanets."

Star Trak: Viewing planets difficult in April night skies | Outdoors | hoosiertimes.com

Viewing planets during April will be limited to the evening and morning hours, with a broad stretch of nighttime lacking major planets.

Mars will be high in the western sky after sunset in April, glowing red-orange among the stars of the constellation Taurus. Compare the Red Planet's rusty color with reddish Aldebaran, the brightest star in Taurus.

After Mars sets around midnight, several hours will pass before Saturn rises shortly after 4 a.m. local time. It will stand 10 degrees high in the southeast by the start of morning twilight, but this is still quite low for good viewing because of turbulence in our atmosphere. Observing the ringed planet will be possible toward the end of the month when it will be more than 20 degrees high as twilight begins. Even at low altitude, moons of Saturn can be spotted in small telescopes.

Signs of a hidden Planet Nine in our solar system may be an illusion | Science News for Students

Planet Nine might be a mirage. What once looked like evidence for a massive planet hiding at the solar system's edge may be an illusion. That's the conclusion of a new study.

"We can't rule it out," says Kevin Napier of Planet Nine. He's a physicist at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. "But there's not necessarily a reason to rule it in."

Previous work had suggested that a number of far-out objects in the solar system clump in the sky as if shepherded by an unseen giant planet. That planet would have to have at least 10 times the mass of Earth. Astronomers dubbed the invisible world Planet Nine or Planet X.

Two strange planets: Neptune and Uranus remain mysterious after new findings

Computer simulations show that water and ammonia, the main components of Uranus and Neptune, enter an unusual state at very high pressures and temperatures: a "superionic state," which has the properties of both a solid and a liquid. In this state, the hydrogen ions become mobile within the lattice structure formed by oxygen or nitrogen.

Recent experimental studies confirm that superionic water can exist at the depth where, according to theory, the stably layered region is located. It could therefore be that the stratified layer is formed by superionic components. However, it is unclear whether the components are actually able to suppress convection, since the physical properties of the superionic state are not known.

UFO videos, shot by US Navy and later leaked, declassified by Pentagon

The Pentagon on Monday released three unclassified videos showing "unidentified aerial phenomena" in an attempt to "clear up any misconceptions" regarding whether the videos – which have been circulating for years – are real.

The three videos, the first of which was leaked in 2007 and discovered by the U.S. Navy in 2009, show small, flying objects. In one of the videos, a person exclaims, "What the (expletive) is that?!"

Two of the videos were recorded in January 2015, according to the Department of Defense. The other was taken in November 2004. In a statement, the Defense Department said the Navy " previously acknowledged " the videos were Navy videos.

Power Grab: Warehouse Robots Take Materials Handling To Next Level

No longer content to release videos of humanoid robots doing backflips, Boston Dynamics this week unveiled something logistically incredible: a prototype of its new box-moving machine.

Retailer A.S. Watson implemented a fleet of IAM Robotics' Swift robots, seen here lined up for duty ... [+] at its Benelux e-commerce fulfillment center in the Netherlands.

But the world right now is begging for robots to lend a helping arm. That's because e-commerce demands currently are overwhelming retail distribution centers, and fulfillment centers. Food Delivery Via Autonomous Robots Has Rolled Into Miami - Eater Miami

Miami-based startup Reef Technology and robotics startup Cartken have partnered up to bring electric-powered delivery robots to Miami. The robots now deliver dinner orders from Reef's network of delivery-only kitchens to recipients located within a 3/4-mile radius in Downtown Miami. They plan to expand the robots to other neighborhoods in the following weeks.

"The rising demand for delivery has created a bottleneck during peak dining hours that slows efficiency," said Matt Lindenberger, chief technology officer at Reef. "We're looking at our robot delivery service as a long-term solution that can advance the delivery ecosystem by offering speed, quality, and scale while reducing congestion and carbon emission."

Is Boston Dynamics becoming a boring robotics company? – TechTalks

Boston Dynamics has made a name for itself through fascinating videos of biped and quadruped robots doing backflips, opening doors, and dancing to Uptown Funk. Now, it has revealed its latest gadget: A robot that looks like a huge overhead projector on wheels.

It's called Stretch, it doesn't do backflips, it doesn't dance, and it's made to do one task: moving boxes. It sounds pretty boring.

But this could, in fact, become the most successful commercial product of Boston Dynamics and turn it into a profitable company.

Swiss robots use UV light to zap viruses aboard passenger planes | Reuters

UVeya, a Swiss start-up, is conducting the trials of the robots with Dubai-based airport services company Dnata inside Embraer jets from Helvetic Airways, a charter airline owned by Swiss billionaire Martin Ebner.

Aircraft makers still must certify the devices and are studying the impact their UV light may have on interior upholstery, which could fade after many disinfections, UVeya co-founder Jodoc Elmiger said.

Still, he's hopeful robot cleaners could reduce people's fear of flying, even as COVID-19 circulates.

Even without a brain, metal-eating robots can search for food | Penn Today

When it comes to powering mobile robots, batteries present a problematic paradox: the more energy they contain, the more they weigh, and thus the more energy the robot needs to move. Energy harvesters, like solar panels, might work for some applications, but they don't deliver power quickly or consistently enough for sustained travel.

James Pikul , assistant professor in Penn Engineering's Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics, is developing robot-powering technology that has the best of both worlds. His environmentally controlled voltage source, or ECVS, works like a battery, in that the energy is produced by repeatedly breaking and forming chemical bonds, but it escapes the weight paradox by finding those chemical bonds in the robot's environment, like a harvester.

430,000 years ago a meteor exploded over Antarctica, leaving clues in the debris

It was 430,000 years ago, in the middle of the Pleistocene epoch. Elsewhere, some of the earliest Neanderthals were spreading across Europe, mammoths roamed the Northern Hemisphere, and Earth's ice sheets were growing thicker.

The space rock slammed into the planet's thick atmosphere. Friction tore it apart, and as the disintegrating meteor plummeted toward the Antarctic plateau, it left a flaming, incandescent trail in its wake. As it neared the ice, the meteor exploded in the sky, launching a superheated jet of gas and vaporized cosmic debris straight at the ground.

We need to talk about UFOs again - The Washington Post

The hard-working staff here at Spoiler Alerts has probably written close to 2,000 columns since coming to The Washington Post. Among those that generated a steady stream of responses was one from 2019 headlined " UFOs exist and everyone needs to adjust to that fact ." That column did not say that aliens have visited Earth. Among the things it did say was that there literally are objects flying around that no one, including U.S.

In the two years since that column appeared, the U.S. government continues to tiptoe toward the normalization of the idea of unidentified flying objects (UFOs). Last year the Department of Defense released three videos (one recorded in 2004 and the other two in 2015) of U.S. Navy pilots seeing something and having no idea what it was. In its news release , the Pentagon said, "the aerial phenomena observed in the videos remain characterized as 'unidentified,'" putting the U in UFO.

The Space (ETF) Race: UFO, ROKT and ARKX | Kiplinger

Hokey one-liners aside, private space travel, exploration and operation is one of the smallest and youngest industries we have left to invest in. Even if you're being generous, space- adjacent plays number in the dozens, and you've likely got the requisite fingers to count the pure plays. Yet investor interest is robust enough that a cottage industry of space ETFs has popped up over the past couple of years.

It's a growth market, to be sure. In a 2020 note, Morgan Stanley estimates "the global space industry could generate revenue of more than $1 trillion or more in 2040, up from $350 billion currently." And most of that will find its way into a number of larger existing sectors and industries.

For others, it is a confirmation of a hope – that there are alternative realities to the beliefs the majority currently hold. Confirming the reality of a UFO landing on Earth opens up vast possibilities that people had heretofore thought impossible.

Currently, Mexico has a UFO. It is not an Unidentified Flying Object. It is an Unequivocal Failing Organization. The name of the UFO is Pemex or Petróleos Mexicanos. Pemex is the largest taxpayer in Mexico, its largest company, and one of the largest companies in Latin America. It is a vital strategic national asset. ICE targets aliens who failed to depart US voluntarily in nationwide operation 'Broken

Voluntary departure is typically requested by the alien and granted by an immigration judge, where the alien is granted about 60 to 120 days to arrange their own departure, versus facing a formal deportation and the barriers to readmission that it carries. Voluntary departures benefit U.S. taxpayers by lowering the costs of deportations.

When an alien fails to depart the country per the agreement, they become subject to a final removal order which is then carried out as a formal deportation by ICE. In addition to the barrier on readmission, an illegal re-entry after a formal deportation is a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

An Astronaut's Heart Shrank From Space Travel, Study Finds - The New York Times

In a study published on Monday in the journal Circulation , scientists reported that the largest chamber of the heart of Scott Kelly, who spent nearly a year on the International Space Station in 2015 and 2016, shrank in mass by more than one-quarter by the time he returned to Earth.

That just adds to the litany of transformations that the human body undergoes without the steady downward pull of gravity. Astronauts also tend to have swelled heads, squashed eyeballs, shriveled legs and bones that become more brittle.

4 Stocks to Bet on as Space Travel Gains Prominence

Last year, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (“NASA”) sent astronauts to the International Space Station (“ISS”) for the first time since 2011. Also, private companies like SpaceX launched a record-breaking 26 space missions, an endeavor to test flights for commercializing Earth’s lower orbital programs and delivering packages to the ISS. Virgin Galactic Holdings, Inc.

Why will the momentum continue in 2021? Firstly, satellite imaging market is booming as the demand for landscape and terrain data for autonomous vehicles has witnessed drastic growth, thanks to the advancement of the self-driving era. Additionally, communication companies are putting in millions of dollars to provide high-speed connectivity in remote locations across the globe. The Biden administration is also lending support to the space economy’s growth.

SpaceX Starship SN11 rocket fails to land safely after test launch in Texas: SpaceX | Reuters

(Reuters) - An uncrewed SpaceX Starship prototype rocket failed to land safely on Tuesday after a test launch from Boca Chica, Texas, and engineers were investigating, SpaceX said.

"We do appear to have lost all the data from the vehicle," SpaceX engineer John Insprucker said in a webcast video of the rocket's flight test. "We're going to have to find out from the team what happened."

The webcast view was obscured by fog, making it difficult to see the vehicle's landing. Debris from the spacecraft was found scattered five miles (eight km) away from its landing site.
