Intelligent Ways to Search for Extraterrestrials | The New Yorker

The laws of physics suggest no reason why this plan wouldn't work; they merely require that all the energy collected be radiated out again as heat, lest the whole construction melt. This, in turn, means that your cloud of platforms should softly glow. A distant observer training a telescope on your solar system might see something like a hot, opaque screen encircling a dimmed star—a spherical entity, curiously bright at certain wavelengths.

The theoretical physicist Freeman Dyson first speculated about the existence of such structures in 1960. In the decades since, astronomers on Earth have looked repeatedly for so-called Dyson spheres, and nobody has seen one. There are different ways of interpreting this result! Suppose you're a space-faring alien society. You've established colonies on a few planets and moons in your solar system, but your population is growing and you're running out of space. What should you do?!! Jason Wright, an astrophysicist at Pennsylvania State University, told me that Dyson wrote his original paper while contemplating an abstract idea—that "the fundamental limit to an energy supply that a species could have is all of the starlight in their system." The fact that Dyson spheres haven't been found, Wright said, doesn't prove that aliens don't exist! 20 Ways to Increase Your Emotional Intelligence ...One of the simplest ways to improve your emotional intelligence is to identify your sources of stress and head them off at the pass. Stress-relief measures, like yoga, deep breathing, and meditation may all work for some people, but for others, hitting the speed bag, going for a run, or even just getting in a good yell may be more effective.!! It might just mean that astronomers should start looking for evidence of less ambitious alien projects.

Near-Earth objects could be used by extraterrestrials 'to watch our world,' stunning

Although Earth only has one moon , it does have other natural satellites, including asteroid 2016 HO3, known as a "co-orbital object." These tiny celestial objects could be an "attractive location for extraterrestrial intelligence," according to a new study.

The research suggests that these space rocks could be hiding grounds for an advanced civilization, given their small size and close proximity to the planet.

"These near-Earth objects provide an ideal way to watch our world from a secure natural object," the study's abstract reads . "That provides resources an ETI [extraterrestrial intelligence] might need: materials, a firm anchor, and concealment! The two closest stars to Earth are Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B, which are approximately 4.3 light-years from Earth. A light-year, which measures distance in space, equals 6 trillion miles.

Seth Shostak is a senior astronomer at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif. (SETI is short for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.) Researchers there are searching for intelligent aliens — ones that "can at least use a radio transmitter," Mr. Shostak said.

As far as the green little guys that some imagine waddle through Area 51's hallways, Mr. Shostak said there was almost no chance! Quite a lot has been going on:

Helena College course aims to answer questions about extraterrestrial beings | Montana News |

Dr. Richard O'Connor and Dr. Joan Bird teach a continuing education course titled "Are UFOs a Threat to National Security?" at Helena College on Thursday night.

"Aliens exist" is something that is generally accepted as an absolute truth by the select few who take the class of Dr. Richard O'Connor and Dr. Joan Bird.

The Helena College continuing education course titled "Are UFOs a threat to national security?" is a trip down the rabbit hole of nationwide and Montana-specific extraterrestrial activity. The aim is not only to educate those who choose to take the class on the extensive history of this activity, but to also encourage engagement in a topic previously considered taboo.

This question and response acts as a kind of thesis statement for the entire mission of the class. The course is taking place each Thursday night for four weeks of October. O'Connor dedicated the first 2 1/2 hour class to breaking down the taboo around discussing possibly extraterrestrial activity.

New evidence that an extraterrestrial collision 12,800 years ago triggered an abrupt climate

Archaeologist and Special Projects Director at the Savannah River Archaeological Research Program and South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of South Carolina

In the space of just a couple of years, average temperatures abruptly dropped , resulting in temperatures as much as 14 degrees Fahrenheit cooler in some regions of the Northern Hemisphere. If a drop like that happened today, it would mean the average temperature of Miami Beach would quickly change to that of current Montreal, Canada. Layers of ice in Greenland show that this cool period in the Northern Hemisphere lasted about 1,400 years.
