Astronauts getting ready for space travel | News | avpress.com

Future Virgin Galactic passengers took part in an initial Astronaut Readiness Program this week at the Baltimore headquarters of Under Armour, the company making custom-fit spacesuits for the spaceline.

While continuing to test its SpaceShipTwo spaceship in preparation to begin commercial passenger operations as soon as next year, Virgin Galactic has also started preparing future astronauts for their flights.

The spaceline kicked off its Astronaut Readiness Program this week in Baltimore at the headquarters of Under Armour, the company creating the firm's custom-fit spacesuits, with some of the future astronauts slated to fly on some of the earliest commercial flights, Virgin Galactic officials said Friday.

Hibernating astronauts would need smaller spacecraft

Now the Agency's SciSpacE team has called in ESA's Concurrent Design Facility—a multimedia facility enabling expert teams to perform initial evaluations of proposed future missions—to assess the advantages of human hibernation for a trip to a neighboring planet, such as Mars.

Beginning with an assessment on the current state of the art in human hibernation, with the help of ESA Topical Team scientists from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the University of Goethe, Frankfurt, the CDF team went to investigate for the first time the potential impact of hibernation on system-level mission design. They took as their reference an existing mission study to send six humans to Mars and back in a five year timescale.

And understandably so. For the last year and a half, husband and wife duo Ian and Jordana Fichtenbaum, founders of Zero G Kitchen , have been developing the first zero-gravity oven that could revolutionize space food and bring a taste of home to astronauts who dearly miss it. Last week, the oven arrived at the space station. No date has yet been announced for it to be tested.

The Fichtenbaums' mission is both simple and highly technical: "We want to build a kitchen in space, one piece at a time, and partner with companies, educators and researchers all along the way," said Ian Fichtenbaum.

The Space Review: Cheers! Alcoholic beverages in space

On November 2, 12 bottles of Bordeaux wine were launched to the International Space Station (ISS) . These bottles are not intended for holiday celebrations by the crew, however (consumption of alcohol is officially prohibited in space.) Instead.

As novel as this experiment sounds, the Bordeaux team is not the first group to examine how alcoholic beverages age in space. That distinction is held by two whisky producers, one in Scotland, the other in Japan. In 2011, Scotch whisky producer Ardbeg partnered with Nanoracks to launch the first whisky aging experiment in orbit. When the samples were returned to Earth in 2014, a clear difference was readily apparent from the control samples that remained on Earth—and not for the better.

How we probe and pollute the cosmos

The space age erupted with a flurry of satellites. The first two Soviet Sputniks launched in 1957, soon followed by the US Explorer I and Vanguard I. In 1959, spurred on by cold-war tensions, NASA selected seven men as astronauts for its Project Mercury programme. (Thirteen women who passed the same hurdles, courtesy of a private, parallel programme, were vetoed.) Barely a decade later, NASA's Apollo astronauts walked on the Moon.

The dawn of space exploration was all about the now. It was daring and risky, punctuated by engineering miracles and an air of invincibility. It wasn't, however, focused on the long term. Now, six decades on from Sputnik, old spacecraft are displayed in museums, robotic missions regularly reveal secrets from throughout the Universe and private companies such as SpaceX are planning colonies on Mars.
