NASA Needs Sharper Leadership to Get to the Moon, Let Alone Mars | Space

Two longtime spaceflight experts told a group of congressional representatives that NASA needed stronger leadership to meet its ambitious 2024 lunar-landing goal, much less to put humans on Mars .

That testimony came during a meeting of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology's space and aeronautics subcommittee held on Wednesday (Nov. 13). The hearing focused on how to build a human exploration program that keeps Mars as a long-term goal shaping even lunar activities, including NASA's Artemis program to land humans on the moon in 2024.

1st Methane, Now Oxygen: Another Possible 'Biosignature' Gas Is Acting Weird on Mars | Space

"We're beginning to see this tantalizing correlation between methane and oxygen for a good part of the Mars year," study co-author Sushil Atreya, a professor of climate and space sciences at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, said in a statement . "I think there's something to it. I just don't have the answers yet. Nobody does."

The newly reported results come courtesy of Curiosity's Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument, a small chemistry lab that the rover carries on its body. The mission team has been using SAM to characterize the Red Planet's atmosphere and analyze samples of dirt and drilled rock since Curiosity landed inside Gale Crater in August 2012.

China shows off its Mars lander to the world ahead of 2020 mission

China invited observers to a successful test of its Mars lander as the country pushes for inclusion in more global space projects. The demonstration of hovering, obstacle avoidance and deceleration capabilities was conducted at a site outside Beijing, simulating conditions on the red planet where the pull of gravity is about a third of that on Earth.

China plans to launch a lander and rover to Mars next year to explore parts of the planet in detail. Beijing's burgeoning space programme achieved a lunar milestone earlier this year by landing a probe on the mysterious far side of the moon.
