Celebrating A Year Of Mars InSight

Taken shortly after landing, this photo shows InSight's instruments still packed neatly on its deck.

It's been about a year since the Mars InSight lander screamed through the Martian atmosphere and settled safely on the wide, flat expanse of Elysium Planitia.

Halfway through InSight's two-year mission, part of the lander's mission has been a grand success, but engineers at JPL are still struggling with another instrument. The data it gathers will help shape future missions, but on InSight's first "Mars-iversary," it's worth remembering that past missions also helped shape the lander that's now teaching us about Mars' inner workings.

Many things are taking place:

Mars CEO: Gen Z is transforming the $35 billion company's workplace - Business Insider

For Mars CEO Grant Reid, listening to the postmillennial generation is an essential part of his company's success both internally and externally.

"When I started at Mars, you went to the office every day," Reid told Business Insider. "And I think Gen Z's saying, 'How can I be productive? How can I work to my time?' And technology's allowing us to do much more of that."

To attract and retain talent, Reid says that creating a Gen Z-friendly environment is essential. In practice, this involves fostering an atmosphere of flexibility, which includes open offices and the ability to work from home.

Mars's Strange Equatorial Terrain Could Have Formed Under an Ice Sheet | Digital Trends

Mars is a mysterious place in many ways — not least because its two hemispheres are drastically different . The northern hemisphere of the planet has low plains, with few impact craters, while the southern hemisphere is mountainous and pockmarked by craters. And scientists still aren’t sure why the two halves of the planet are so different.

In between the two hemispheres is a transitional region with unusual geological features called fretted terrain. Areas of fretted terrain contain a strange mix of canyons, cliffs, mounds, ridges, and more, and the European Space Agency’s Mars Express spacecraft has been investigating one such area called Deuteronilus Mensae for clues about how these features developed.

Quite a lot has been going on:

Why go to Mars? - The Christian Post

CP VOICES do not necessarily reflect the views of The Christian Post. Opinions expressed are solely those of the author(s).

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine has renewed his vow to put astronauts on Mars by as early as 2035. The head of America's space program says we'll start by going back to the moon, where we can test the technology necessary to make a much longer voyage to the Red Planet.

But the whole project to put boots on another planet—something incredibly expensive, dangerous, and time-consuming—raises an interesting question: Why should we do this?
