The Physics World 2019 Breakthrough of the Year goes to astronomers working on the Event Horizon Telescope for capturing the first direct visual evidence of a black hole and its "shadow" . Nine other achievements are highly commended in the Top 10 Breakthroughs of 2019 including devices that translate brain activity into speech, an extremely powerful magnet and the first antimatter double slit experiment.
This now-iconic image shows the doughnut-shaped ring of radio emissions surrounding a supermassive black hole that lies at the centre of a galaxy 55 million light-years from Earth. Event Horizon Telescope astronomers are the first to obtained images of the region near the event horizon of a black hole – the point beyond which matter and energy cannot escape the object’s intense gravity.
This may worth something:
Supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy may have a friend
Do supermassive black holes have friends? The nature of galaxy formation suggests that the answer is yes, and in fact, pairs of supermassive black holes should be common in the universe.
I am an astrophysicist and am interested in a wide range of theoretical problems in astrophysics, from the formation of the very first galaxies to the gravitational interactions of black holes, stars and even planets. Black holes are intriguing systems, and supermassive black holes and the dense stellar environments that surround them represent one of the most extreme places in our universe.
The Raiders’ Legendary ‘Black Hole’ Will Be Oakland’s Lasting NFL Legacy
OAKLAND (CBS SF/AP) — For one last time Sunday, Oakland’s most loyal fans will put on their black-and-silver face paint, strap on their colorful ‘Mad Max’ game-day regalia and stream into the Coliseum ready to cheer on their beloved Raiders.
No section in the NFL is as famous. Not Cleveland’s ‘Dog Pound’ nor the Cheese heads at Green Bay’s Lambeau Field. Just ask any television producer who has televised a game in the Coliseum.

An impossibly massive black hole that defied conventional theories has been called into question after multiple researchers suggested the data used to estimate the object's mass may have been wrong.
In other words, the mass of black holes should fall within specific ranges. They can either be small, between three to ten solar masses, or intermediate-sized, between 100 to 100,000 solar masses, or supermassive at 100,000 to a billion solar masses. So when a study describing one that doesn't fit in any of the categories was published in a top peer-reviewed publication, the research community was intrigued.

Planets around a black hole? Calculations show possibility of bizarre worlds
According to the latest theories, planets are formed from fluffy dust aggregates in a protoplanetary disk around a young star. But young stars are not the only objects that possess dust disks. In a novel approach, the researchers focused on heavy disks around supermassive black holes in the nuclei of galaxies.
"Our calculations show that tens of thousands of planets with 10 times the mass of the Earth could be formed around 10 light-years from a black hole," says Eiichiro Kokubo, a professor at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan who studies planet formation. "Around black holes, there might exist planetary systems of astonishing scale."
Scientists say that they have discovered the largest “black hole” that has ever been
JD: First of all what is a black hole that is there in outer space I know? And then is it basically the largest ever?
DD: Black holes Jimmy are collapsed stars kind of the end of a star when they run out of fuel they collapse and shrink inward. They’re still very mysterious. You really can’t do physics inside a black hole because we cannot see it. The idea is gravity becomes so strong around these objects that even light cannot escape or any other kind of signal.
Black Hole Finale: Jaguars seek "sweet" victory
The Jaguars' nickel cornerback has multiple motivations for Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders – some historical, others quite personal – but they center on one thing:
* * *
"Wouldn't it be nice? Sweet," Hayden said Wednesday afternoon as the Jaguars (4-9) prepared to play the Oakland Raiders (6-7) at RingCentral Coliseum Sunday at 4:05 p.m.
"But we have to go out there and do it," said Hayden, the No. 12 overall selection in the 2013 NFL Draft by the Raiders who played four seasons for the franchise before signing with Detroit as an unrestricted free agent in 2017. "We can't talk about it. We've gotta be about it.
Europe's XMM-Newton Telescope Celebrates 20 Years of X-Ray Astronomy | Space
A European Space Agency telescope celebrated 20 years of exploring the secrets of the X-ray universe this week.
The XMM-Newton telescope, which launched on Dec. 10, 1999, has made contributions in various fields of science and astronomy, and has observed objects ranging from galaxy clusters to star flares . But in a press release celebrating the anniversary, scientists zeroed in on the observatory's black hole discoveries.
Black holes are areas in space that are so dense that no other object can escape their pull after passing beyond a point of no return known as the "event horizon." Even light can't escape, which means the black holes can't be seen. But when black holes munch on nearby gas, dust or objects, they produce a distinctive glow that can be mapped out in X-rays.
