Scientist's video shows each planet spinning in one giant globe - Business Insider

Every planet turns to its own beat, and a new animation from a video-savvy scientist shows just how different those rotations are.

James O'Donoghue, a planetary scientist at the Japanese space agency (JAXA) and formerly at NASA , spends his free time making animations of space concepts like the history of the moon and the vastness of our solar system .

He recently created a video showing slices of each planet spinning at its own speed — all in one giant globe.

SUPER-PUFFS may sound like a breakfast cereal but they're actually a rare type of planet that have the density of candy floss, according to Nasa.

The sweet nickname for the young exoplanets has proved to be very fitting thanks to new information from the Hubble Space Telescope.

Nasa tweeted that it had found "new clues about "super-puffy" planets, a rare class of exoplanets as large as Jupiter with extraordinarily low density."

Astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array (ALMA) found a young star surrounded by an astonishing mass of gas. The star, called 49 Ceti, is 40 million years old and conventional theories of planet formation predict that the gas should have disappeared by that age. The enigmatically large amount of gas requests a reconsideration of our current understanding of planet formation.

Planets are formed in gaseous dusty disks called protoplanetary disks around young stars. Dust particles aggregate together to form Earth-like planets or to become the cores of more massive planets by collecting large amounts of gas from the disk to form Jupiter-like gaseous giant planets.

One of the best ways to realize the relative sizes of the eight regular planets is to consider putting them in an empty cereal box.

A common household object is a tennis ball. It is slightly larger than the width of a cereal box and will fit in easily.

I am going to use metric units, particularly the centimeter (cm), of which there are about 2.5 centimeters per inch. (The width of your index finger nail is about 1 centimeters.)

Open Post-Doctoral Position in Magma Ocean-Atmosphere Interactions | Planetary News

The CLEVER Planets team and Department of Earth, Environmental & Planetary Sciences at Rice University are seeking applicants for a fully funded postdoctoral scholar position who would explore magma ocean-atmosphere interactions in rocky planets and how such interactions affect the planetary evolution and habitability. The contract will be initially for a year and is renewable for up to 3 years based on progress and performance. The salary would commensurate with experience.

Google Maps uses hyperspace to travel between planets - 9to5Google

Google Maps is one of the best services for navigating the planet and, for a couple of years now, the web version of Maps has been able to show you the surface of other planets too. Now, Google has quietly updated Maps to throw users into hyperspace when switching between planets.

Spotted on Reddit , Google Maps now shows a neat hyperspace animation when you switch from Earth to other planets in our solar system. We’re not entirely sure when this animation was added, but it seems possible it was added as a nod to the latest installment in the Star Wars franchise. The design of the animation is also nearly identical to how it looks in the latest films.
