LOS ANGELES , Dec. 20, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The California Science Center will take guests on a tour of the solar system alongside pioneering robotic probes, landers, and orbiters in Touch the Stars 3D , premiering on January 17, 2020 .
Touch the Stars 3D, directed by Luke Ployhar and produced by Afterglow Studios, showcases humanity's exploration of space. Rendered in stunning 8K resolution, the film chronicles the valiant exploration of the solar system by unmanned robotic spacecraft with well-known names like Mariner, Voyager, and Galileo.

Capturing alien comets: Simulating rogue bodies on their journey through the solar system
"We present a second potential origin for such comets," says Tom Hands, postdoc at the Institute for Computational Science of the University of Zürich: "They [could have been] captured out of interstellar space in the relatively recent past."
Two interstellar visitors made headlines in recent years. In 2017, the first such object was detected, an asteroid-like body named 'Oumuamua. In August 2019 amateur astronomer Gennady Borisov found a comet that came from interstellar space and will leave the solar system again. 'Oumuamua and Comet Borisov are both leftovers of planet formation in other solar systems, in the same way our comets and asteroids are thought to be the leftovers of planet formation in our solar system.
Meteorites lend clues to origins of earliest history of solar system
Newswise — The isotopic composition of meteorites and terrestrial planets holds important clues about the earliest history of the solar system and the processes of planet formation.
The solar system formed 4.5 billion years ago by the gravitational collapse of a molecular cloud core, which resulted in the formation of a circumsolar disk of gas and dust (sometimes called the solar nebula).
“To understand how the solar system evolved toward its present-day configuration, the events and processes occurring during the earliest stages of solar system history must be reconstructed at a very high temporal and spatial resolution,” said LLNL cosmochemist Thomas Kruijer, lead author of the paper.

CleanPowerSF signs 100-MWac PPA on future California solar system
EDF Renewables North America signed a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with CleanPowerSF for a 100-MW ac tranche of the Palen Solar site known as Maverick 6 Solar Project. The project expects to come online by the end of 2021 and deliver enough clean electricity annually to power 49,000 average California homes.
The Palen Solar site encompasses multiple solar projects located in Riverside County, California on 3,140 acres of federal lands within a Solar Energy Zone (SEZ) and Development Focus Area, managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The BLM completed the federal permitting process, issuing the project a Record of Decision (ROD) in October 2018.
CPCS students build scale model of solar system on Downtown Mall
CHARLOTTESVILLE, V.A. (WVIR) - Some Albemarle County students are getting an out of this world lesson. On Friday, students at Community Public Charter School (CPCS) helped build a scale model of our solar system on the Downtown Mall.
The model stretched from the sun at the Sprint Pavilion, all the way to Pluto at the Omni Hotel. The students designed the models, gave presentations, and even created a website and QR code for the audience to access for more information.
OCI Solar Power adds Array trackers and bifacial modules to existing Texas solar system
A first-of-its-kind renovation has significantly improved the overall performance and reliability of OCI Solar Power ‘s Alamo I solar farm, located in southern San Antonio, Texas.
“Alamo I is now equipped with industry-leading tracker technology and a block of bifacial modules which will be used for field testing and data-gathering,” said Jason Thompson, Construction Manager for OCI Solar Power.
The Alamo 1 solar farm sits on 445 acres of private land on San Antonio’s south side. It began operations in December 2013, was upgraded in 2019 and has a capacity of 39.2 MW ac .
