Canadian scientists are working on a new way to measure the mechanics of the human eye to better identify astronauts at risk of developing ocular damage before they go into space. Collaborating with the Canadian Space Agency and NASA, Université de Montréal researchers Santiago Costantino and Mark Lesk hope to use their expertise in measuring ocular rigidity to protect astronauts from the adverse impacts that space travel can have on their vision.

That bests Peggy Whitson's stay on the ISS in 2016-17, but Koch's currently scheduled sojourn will bring her up just short of Scott Kelly's 340-day record -- Koch is set to be on the space station until February, a 328-day visit. Part of her mission is to study how long-term space travel impacts the human body, info that could be crucial as NASA ponders sending astronauts to Mars.

Richland woman in the running to become NASA astronaut - KXLY
A Richland woman could be headed to space following her graduation from NASA’s Artemis program this January.
Kayla Barron, 32, is a U.S. Navy Lieutenant veteran and Richland High School grad who is expected to graduate from the space program on January 10.
Barron will become a candidate for space travel upon graduation, and she could be selected to be a part of the program’s ambition to land a manned spacecraft on the moon by 2024.
SpaceX is Flying Coffee and Hemp Plants into Outer Space

Colorado-based agricultural company Front Range Biosciences is partnering with SpaceCells USA Inc. and BioServe Space Technologies to send plant tissue culture from coffee and hemp up into Outer Space next year.
