The other is active. We send out probes to distant planets and moons and scan even farther-away heavenly bodies with powerful telescopes that can help us to determine the makeup of a planet's atmosphere.
Looking past the Red Planet, the European Space Agency and NASA are both planning to launch space telescopes that could scan the atmospheres of "exo-planets" potentially hundreds of trillions of miles from Earth.

What NASA's Extraterrestrial Twin Experiment Showed Us | Discover Magazine
Every grade-school scientist knows a good experiment needs a control — a test subject you leave alone to have a baseline for comparison. So when NASA researchers set out to learn exactly how weightlessness and other space hazards like radiation might change the human body, they needed someone to stay behind on Earth as a counterpart. The ideal control would be someone very similar to the space traveler, so NASA chose an actual clone — or, as they're more commonly known, an identical twin.
2020: MMXX | Georgia News | mdjonline.com
Let's start with Roman numerals. One hundred years ago -- 1880 -- you had to remember the year in Roman numerals thus: MDCCCLXXX. 2019 was easier: MMXIX. But 2020 is a breeze: MMXX – you might want to start using it on your correspondence.
Next we have sports. Every four years, the world tunes into the summer Olympics. They're up again in MMXX -- in Tokyo, Japan. Sports fans will have to wait until 2022 (MMXXII) for the winter Olympics.
For those folks born the last day of February in a leap year, they get to have a real birthday in 2020. February will have 29 days instead of its usual 28. No need to celebrate a day early or a day late in MMXX.

2 billion-year-old water in South Africa may hold answers to Mars mysteries - ABC News
Supported by funding from NASA and the National Science Foundation, the researchers collected samples in 2018 and 2019 by descending into a gold and uranium mine operated by Harmony Gold. The water lies in rock fractures accessed through boreholes, allowing the researchers to release some of the pressurized water and filter out material for analysis.
When they examined the material under a scanning electron microscope, they saw rodlike shapes that appeared to be bacteria or similar-looking microbes called archaea. One of the cells was pinched in the middle, apparently in the process of dividing.
Alien contact in the 2020s? Don't rule it out yet
The author's focus is on some scientifically interesting but not nearly as exciting possibilities while flatly eliminating the most obvious evidence staring him in the face. He dismisses the 2004 and 2015 encounters with the Nimitz and Roosevelt carrier battle groups and the now infamous tic tac craft, saying they "don't count." His flawed reasoning for this is justified by saying, " scientists almost unanimously dismiss the possibility they're alien visitors ."
The strangest things seen in the skies over North Wales this year - and what they might have been
From UFOs to theories of possible extraterrestrial sightings, people have been left awe-struck by some strange occurrences this year.
While some sightings were perfectly explained, others have remained a total mystery - leaving many baffled and triggering a flurry of speculation across the region.
Others have simply put the phenomena down to adverse weather conditions, or mistaking unidentified objects in the sky for other planets and stars.
