2020 in Space! Astronauts Ring in New Year (and Decade) from Orbit | Space

The people of Earth weren't the only ones ringing in the year 2020 at midnight. Six explorers in orbit celebrated the new  year's arrival - and indeed, a new decade - aboard the International Space Station .

"Happy New Year from low Earth orbit!" NASA astronaut Andrew Morgan wrote on Twitter as Earth began the year 2020.

Morgan celebrated 2020's arrival with crewmates Christina Koch and Jessica Meir (both of NASA), European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano, and Russian cosmonauts Oleg Skripochka and Alexander Skvortsov. Parmitano commands the crew, known as Expedition 60.

Quite a lot has been going on:

Large fight outside Orbit Fun Center prompts immediate changes

HUBER HEIGHTS — Fights involving more than 200 youths Saturday after a teen skate night at Orbit Fun Center of Huber Heights prompted the business to make changes.

Now, for all skating sessions that start after 8 p.m., patrons 16 and younger must be accompanied by an adult or guardian 21 and older. However, those who have their own skates will not need a chaperone, the business posted Wednesday night on social media.

Because of the number of fights that were taking place, Huber Heights police issued a “signal 99” countywide call for officer assistance.

India Announces Plans For Its First Human Space Mission | Valley Public Radio

India's space agency says that four astronaut candidates have been selected for its first human mission, targeted to launch by 2022, but they've not been publicly named or identified.

India hopes to join the United States, Russia and China as the world's fourth nation capable of sending people to space. It has been developing its own crewed spacecraft, called Gaganyaan (or "sky vehicle" in Sanskrit), that would let two to three people orbit the Earth on a week-long spaceflight.

Out of Orbit - Visegrad Insight

“This was the moment when central Europe's populists issued their declaration of independence not only from Brussels but also, more dramatically, from western liberalism and its ethos of openness to the world. Central Europe's fearmongering populists interpreted the refugee crisis as conclusive evidence that liberalism weakened the capacity of nations to defend themselves in a hostile world.”

Although not wholly uncontested in the ensuing debate, Ivan Krastev and Stephen Holmes argued to what extent the post-1989 emigration from eastern and central Europe had awakened fears of national disappearance and hostile reactions to the refugee crisis in 2015. Would populism have taken hold without populists’ anti-immigration politics?
