The woman who paid $250,000 to go into space - BBC News

The 61-year-old business school professor signed up back in 2005 for the promise of five minutes in zero-gravity, paying $250,000 (£190,500) to travel beyond the earth's atmosphere.

Now the company that sold her the ticket, Virgin Galactic, says it will finally begin flights this year. Its founder, Sir Richard Branson, will be on the first trip, and Mrs Maisonrouge won't be far behind.

If all goes to plan, Virgin Galactic will be the first private company to take tourists into space. The company says 600 people have already purchased tickets, including celebrities like Justin Bieber and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Virgin Galactic's 2nd Spaceship Just Reached a Major Milestone | Travel + Leisure | Travel +

On Tuesday, Richard Branson’s space travel company announced that all major structural elements of the spacecraft have been assembled and that the vehicle is capable of carrying its own weight. It reached its “Weight on Wheels” milestone much faster than Virgin Galactic’s first spacecraft, the VSS Unity, the company said in a statement.

Work on the spacecraft will now shift to connecting its flight systems before it is capable of ground testing and then, finally, test flights. The work will continue at Mojave Air & Space Port in California.

Hear from the Williamsburg woman selected as one of NASA’s newest astronauts | WTKR.com

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Wearing blue jumpsuits and with eager grins, 11 men and women walked across a stage in Houston, Texas, last week.

* * *

They are history makers - the next NASA class to head to space - and one of those graduates is Cardman, a Williamsburg resident. Cardman spoke to News 3 on Friday from the Johnson Space Center.

Two years ago - while sitting with friends and watching "Apollo 13," of course - she got the call from NASA that she was chosen among 18,000 applicants.

Elon Musk gives details about sending 1 million people to Mars by 2050 - Business Insider

In a series of tweets on Thursday, Elon Musk revealed new details about his plan to build a city of 1 million people on Mars by 2050.

Musk said he hoped to build 1,000 Starships — the towering and ostensibly fully reusable spaceship that SpaceX is developing in South Texas — over 10 years. That's 100 Starships per year.

Eventually, Musk added, the goal is to launch an average of three Starships per day and make the trip to Mars available to anybody.
