Interstellar biological experiments could aid human space travel

On Saturday, Feb. 15, 2020, a rocket and spacecraft were launched from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia carrying tubes of bacteria and bacteriophage, the viruses that prey on bacteria. They are now on their way to the International Space Station (ISS).

Scientists in the University of Wisconsin–Madison Department of Biochemistry are hoping that by sending them into Earth's orbit, we can learn more about how microbes respond to being in space. In preparing for a future in which long-term and commercial space travel are possible, researchers say it's increasingly important to understand how the bacteria in and on humans — many essential for health — function in this environment, says Vatsan Raman , professor of biochemistry.

After successfully conducting its final in-flight abort test for the new Crew Dragon spacecraft, SpaceX is ready to transport NASA astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) using all-American technology for the first time. But as that happens, the Elon Musk-run company is simultaneously offering a program specifically for amateurs: to take a trip around planet Earth from the height of the ISS.

Space travel breakthrough: 100,000MPH plasma engine to cut travel times to Mars | Science | News

The UK company based in Bletchley, Milton Keynes, has built and tested a miniature prototype plasma thruster, observing exhaust speeds of 100,000mph.

He said: “Speed in space is money. The less time you spend in space, the less equipment you need in space, the less weight you need in space, the less fuel you need to get to space, and hence it all works in your favour.”

Traditional rockets may be our only way of escaping the clutch of Earth’s gravity but once in orbit, burning rocket fuel becomes a costly and ineffective way to push a spacecraft forward.

Virgin Galactic rally's three drivers: UFO space ETF issuer

The skyrocketing space tourism stock has gained a whopping 199% year to date and nearly 310% in the last three months as speculative investors piled into the name, leading some to label it Wall Street's new Tesla .

Explanations for the sudden surge have been few and far between, with Morgan Stanley analysts — who have an "overweight" rating on the name along with a $22 price target — calling for an "overdue" correction on Thursday. The stock cooled off on Friday, falling nearly 7% in intraday trading after snapping an eight-day winning streak .
