Most parts of the mission including the rocket and the rover, named Rosalind Franklin, are ready. But not enough time remains before the launch opportunity in July to complete tests of the parachutes, fix issues with an electronics module and finish the spacecraft's software.
"We could launch, but that would mean we are not doing all the tests," Jan Woerner, the director general of the European Space Agency, said during a news conference on Thursday morning where the decision was announced. "We cannot really cut corners."

Elon Musk tweeted a photo of the moon and called it Mars — again - Business Insider
Nine months ago, Elon Musk tweeted a picture of the moon with the text "Occupy Mars," and tweets pointing out the error racked up tens of thousands of likes.
* * *
It seems likely that Musk, whose company SpaceX is developing a rocket to go to Mars , is aware that the graphic is inaccurate. SpaceX has been selling T-shirts since 2014 that bear the same graphic but with an actual picture of Mars. Just before tweeting the graphic Wednesday, Musk tweeted that "Mars is god of war & memes are a form of war ... and fun too!"
Magnetic Fields Around NASA's Mars Lander Are 10 Times Stronger Than Scientists Expected
When NASA's Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport (Insight) lander set down on Mars in November of 2018, it began its two-year primary mission of studying Mars' seismology and interior environment.
And now, just over a year and a half later, the results of the lander's first twelve months on the Martian surface have been released in a series of studies.
One of these studies, which was recently published in the journal Nature Geosciences , shared some rather interesting finds about magnetic fields on Mars.

Why Mars is more interested in measuring attention, not impressions - Digiday
While advertisers have long-called for a way to see how much attention their ads get , they often lack the tools to do so.
For Mars, however, the widening gap between an ad impression served and actual attention is pushing the company to turn to attention-based metrics. Mars is set to embark on a number of tests in the coming months to understand how attention generated by its ads varies by format and channel before going on to investigate what triggers that engagement, said its director of consumer insights for media and creative, Sorin Patilinet.
NASA's Mars 2020 Rover Gets New, Official Name: Perseverance - The New York Times
The next NASA rover headed to Mars, up to now blandly referred to as Mars 2020, has been named Perseverance.
That was the winning moniker selected in NASA's "Name the Rover" essay contest, which began last summer. Volunteer judges sifted through 28,000 entries from children ranging from kindergartners to high schoolers and selected 155 semifinalists. In January, NASA announced the final nine. (The other eight were Clarity, Courage, Endurance, Fortitude, Ingenuity, Promise, Tenacity and Vision.)
