Let's move to Mars: the best books about our future in space | Books | The Guardian

Our dreams of voyaging in space are even older than that. Jules Verne's 1865 adventure story From the Earth to the Moon is eerily prescient. More than a century before Apollo 11, Verne imagines a giant cannon built in Florida with great controversy and at great expense, which launches three men in a capsule. They fire retrorockets to land on the moon and eventually return to splash down in the Pacific Ocean.

NASA's New Mars Rover Still Launching in July Despite Coronavirus

Despite major budget overruns — and an ongoing pandemic sweeping the globe — NASA remains determined to get its next Mars rover, named "Perseverance," off the ground in July, according to SpaceNews . Its name truly couldn't have been chosen at a more appropriate time.

NASA's return mission which includes the six-wheeled rover is set to launch on July 17. In a March 19 virtual town hall, NASA's planeteray science division director Lori Glaze told reporters that Perseverance made a short list of the agency's top-most priority missions, as SpaceNews reported last week.

NASA's Mars rover Perseverance still on track for July launch despite coronavirus outbreak | Space

Space agency officials remain optimistic that the car-size Perseverance rover , the centerpiece of the Mars 2020 mission, will be ready to launch during a three-week window that opens on July 17. The stakes are high, because such windows come just once every 26 months, when Earth and the Red Planet align properly for interplanetary missions.

"We're going to ensure that we meet that launch window in July," Lori Glaze, the director of NASA's Planetary Science Division, said during a virtual town hall meeting on March 19, according to SpaceNews . "As of right now, and even if we go to a next stage of alert, Mars 2020 is moving forward on schedule. And everything is, so far, very well on track."
