Astronomers discover new moon temporarily orbiting Earth
Astronomers have discovered that a car-sized second natural satellite, commonly called a mini-moon, is temporarily orbiting Earth for the past three years.
"Earth has a new temporarily captured object/possible mini-moon called 2020 CD3. On the night of Feb. 15, my Catalina Sky Survey teammate Teddy Pruyne and I found a 20th magnitude object," Kacper Wierzchos, a researcher with the Catalina Sky Survey at the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Lab, tweeted this week.

The three-member Expedition 62 crew split its time today between biomedical studies and space physics.
NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Andrew Morgan this week are helping doctors to compare bone cells in space with samples on Earth that are levitated magnetically. The observations from the OsteoOmics-02 study could provide deeper insights into bone ailments on Earth, including osteoporosis.
Meir also serviced a 3D bioprinter today replacing components inside the device that manufactures complex organ structures aboard the orbiting lab. She later joined Morgan for more eye checks this week using optical coherence tomography in the station's Harmony module.
Mini-moon orbits Earth, but it won't be for long
It was just recently discovered but has been flying around the planet for about three years, but it's only temporary, experts say and CNN reported , despite, scientists not saying how long it will continue on its path.

For first time, US military recruits sworn in by astronaut in orbit
But more than 1,000 future service members were part of an unforgettable ceremony Wednesday when Army Col. Andrew Morgan , stationed on the International Space Station some 250 miles in low-Earth orbit, swore in recruits at 150 locations across the country.
This first-ever nationwide oath of enlistment from space, spearheaded by the Army, was primarily hosted at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, but also at high schools and recruiting stations from coast to coast.
Jupiter-like exoplanet orbits its star in only 18 hours - BBC Science Focus Magazine
Astronomers have observed an exoplanet orbiting a star in just over 18 hours – the shortest orbital period ever seen for a planet of its type.
This means that a single year for this hot Jupiter-like planet – a gas giant similar in size and composition to Jupiter in our own Solar System – passes in less than a day of Earth time.
Scientists believe the discovery may help solve the mystery of whether such planets are in the process of spiralling towards their suns to their destruction.
Cygnus cargo ship leaves International Space Station, begins new mission in orbit | Space
Northrop Grumman's Cygnus NG-12 cargo spacecraft departed the International Space Station today (Jan. 31), nearly three months after it arrived at the orbiting laboratory with about 4 tons of supplies and science experiments for the Expedition 61 crew.
The cargo vessel, named the S.S. Alan Bean after the Apollo 12 astronaut, began its journey back to Earth after ground controllers in Houston used the station's Canadarm2 robotic arm to release it in orbit. Before the spacecraft meets its fiery demise in Earth's atmosphere, it will spend about a month in orbit deploying various scientific payloads.
ASU's Phoenix CubeSat Satellite launched into orbit - The State Press
The ASU Phoenix CubeSat team successfully launched its satellite from the International Space Station on Feb. 19, marking one of the goals in a years-long project by the University.
After more than four months of sitting aboard the International Space Station, the spacecraft is now in low orbit close to where it was launched.
Sarah Rogers, project manager of the Phoenix CubeSat and an aerospace engineering graduate student, said the CubeSat was launched from the ISS from a deployer pod and, upon command, was pushed into space using a spring.
