San Francisco – Long maligned as job-stealers and aspiring overlords, robots are being increasingly relied on as fast, efficient, contagion-proof champions in the war against the deadly coronavirus.
Meals were served, temperatures taken and communications handled by machines, one of them named “Cloud Ginger” by its maker CloudMinds, which has operations in Beijing and California.
“It provided useful information, conversational engagement, entertainment with dancing, and even led patients through stretching exercises,” CloudMinds president Karl Zhao said of the humanoid robot.

Stannard says the area's residents in northwest Washington, Maryland, are delighted with the system. "They love it, I mean they really want them (robots), everybody just calls for the robot, it doesn't matter what goes in it," she said. A condition to place orders is that customers do not reside more than a mile from the establishment. Stannard closely watches the orders before loading them onto the white robots, which line up at the exit, waiting to fulfill their daily tasks.

CSUF professor’s new book on the history of robots in America resonates in coronavirus era
The stay-at-home order over the coronavirus pandemic threw a kink into plans for a launch party to celebrate Dustin Abnet’s new book, “The American Robot: A Cultural History.”

Robots Are Cleaning Grocery Store Floors During The Coronavirus Outbreak
The coronavirus outbreak has forced retailers to focus more on sanitation while they are struggling to restock shelves and hire more employees. Some grocery stores are turning to floor cleaning robots for additional help. Phil Duffy, vice president of product management and marketing at Brain Corp, shared how autonomous floor care robots are helping retailers.
"Working with our OEM partners, Brain Corp has deployed or enabled more than 10,000 robots across various industries, including grocery, retail, malls, airports, commercial buildings and more. This represents the largest fleet of autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) operating in indoor public spaces in the world. BrainOS-powered machines are being used at thousands of sites, including several Fortune 500 companies such as Walmart," Duffy said.

JeeLoo Liu envisions a future with sociable robots playing with children, caring for senior citizens, serving at restaurants, advising on legal matters and even making medical decisions.
Liu, chair of the Philosophy Department at Cal State Fullerton, is in the second year of a prestigious Carnegie fellowship. In 2019, she was one of 32 fellows selected to receive up to $200,000 to do research and writing on various topics. The only fellow with a philosophy focus, Liu selected the topic Technical and Cultural Creativity — Potential and Perils.
