(CNN) Researchers are "reading the rocks" and the history they show on Mars to paint a picture of when the planet supported liquid water on its surface billions of years ago.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Shell Midstream Partners ( SHLX.N ) said on Thursday it is offering storage in its Mars Sour crude cavern on the U.S. Gulf Coast, as offshore producers are not cutting output like onshore shale drillers despite the oil price downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
Crude oil storage has quickly filled since measures to stem the spread of the virus chopped about 30% off of global fuel demand, sending prices crashing into negative territory last month. As a result, traders have been willing to pay high premiums to store barrels.

The Arab world’s first Mars probe has arrived at its launch site in Japan after officials navigated coronavirus-related quarantine protocols and travel restrictions to ensure the spacecraft can launch on time in July.
The Mars orbiter arrived at the Tanegashima Space Center in Japan on April 24 after a multi-day journey from Dubai via air and sea transport, ready to begin final testing, fueling and other preparations for liftoff during a three-week window opening July 14 (U.S. time) aboard a Japanese H-2A rocket.

NASA’s Mars Exploration Program is in calamitous straits. Cuts to the program in President Donald Trump’s budget proposal for the 2021 fiscal year (FY) could pull the plug on the space agency’s ensemble of orbiters, as well as its only active Mars rover, Curiosity, which has been prowling the Red Planet since 2012.
If unchanged, the budget numbers would, in this calendar year, shutter an aged but functional communications relay and science orbiter, Mars Odyssey, which has operated at the planet since 2001. They would also curtail Curiosity just as it reaches new heights in its ongoing science investigations on Mount Sharp in Gale Crater.

Mars had a global magnetic field much earlier -- and much later -- in the planet's history than scientists have previously known.
A planet's global magnetic field arises from what scientists call a dynamo: a flow of molten metal within the planet's core that produces an electrical current. On Earth, the dynamo is what makes compass needles point north. But Mars' dynamo has been extinct for billions of years.
New findings from UBC researchers working with colleagues in the U.S. and France, published today in Science Advances , bring us closer to knowing the precise timing and duration of Mars' dynamo.
