Despite the difficulties of working amid the virus, officials said they have made significant progress on what they called one of the most ambitious and significant robotic programs the space agency has tackled in years.
The rover would stockpile the samples on the Martian surface, to be picked up on a subsequent mission, to launch to Mars in 2026, for return to Earth. That would be a first, Glaze said.
Scientists have studied samples of meteorites that have come from Mars, but "it's not the same as getting an actual sample of pristine Mars rock and soil to study," she said. "And now we're at a point where we can begin to attempt his amazing feat."

UCL report evaluates transformative value of Emirates Mars Mission | Science|Business
The report , which was jointly launched with the UAE Minister for Advanced Sciences and Mission Project Manager on the 30-day countdown mark, outlines the social and economic impacts of the Emirates Mission to Mars (EMM), and in particular examines whether it is possible to attribute significant national transformation to a single science mission.
The United Arab Emirates is due to launch the Hope (Al Amal) satellite in July 2020 to study the atmosphere and climate of Mars. Using an innovative orbit trajectory and combination of three scientific instruments, the Emirates Mission to Mars (EMM) aims to provide scientists around the world with data to better answer questions on the climate and weather systems of Mars and to understand the inner workings of other planetary atmospheres, including Earth's.
NASA to Hold Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover Launch Briefing – NASA's Mars Exploration Program
The mission will launch from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Scheduled for 9:15 a.m. EDT (6:15 a.m. PDT) July 20, the launch is managed by NASA's Launch Services Program . No matter what day Perseverance lifts off during its launch period, it will land at Mars' Jezero Crater on Feb. 18, 2021.

What Mars 2020 will teach us about crewed trips to the Red Planet - POLITICO
Kenneth Farley, geochemistry professor at the California Institute of Technology. | California Institute of Technology

Farley is a realist about how squabbles in Washington can derail space and science missions. The sample tubes that will hold sediment from the Martian surface collected by Perseverance are designed to wait decades for a ride home, a nod to the fact that funding for the two follow-on missions is far from guaranteed.
"The discoveries we make will play a role in the funding and politics," he said. "There's the potential that we will see something that will really compel a sample return. That's the big dream that could come true."

Martian Moon's Orbit Hints at an Ancient Ring of Mars | SETI Institute
Scientists from the SETI Institute and Purdue University have found that the only way to produce Deimos's unusually tilted orbit is for Mars to have had a ring billions of years ago. While some of the more massive planets in our solar system have giant rings and numerous big moons, Mars only has two small, misshapen moons, Phobos and Deimos. Although these moons are small, their peculiar orbits hide important secrets about their past.
For a long time, scientists believed that Mars's two moons, discovered in 1877, were captured asteroids. However, since their orbits are almost in the same plane as Mars's equator, that the moons must have formed at the same time as Mars. But the orbit of the smaller, more distant moon Deimos is tilted by two degrees.
In 30 Days A Country Of 9.6 Million People Will Send A Mission To Mars. This Is What 'Hope' Can Do
How can a small country in the Middle East with a combined population of just 9.6 million launch a mission to Mars?
It's a Mars orbiter that was developed by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Center in Dubai, UAE in partnership with the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado, Boulder. The orbiter will reach Mars in February 2021 and begin studying the Martian atmosphere in late 2021. It aims to build the first full picture of Mars' climate throughout the Martian year.
Virginia-Based Mars Says It’s Planning To Evolve Uncle Ben’s Rice Brand Hours After
(CNN) — Uncle Ben’s owner Mars is planning to change the rice maker’s “brand identity.”
In a statement on its website Wednesday, the McLean, Virginia-based Mars wrote that “now is the right time to evolve the Uncle Ben’s brand, including its visual brand identity, which we will do.”
“We don’t yet know what the exact changes and timing will be, but we are evaluating all possibilities,” Mars added.
SpaceX wants to build an offshore spaceport near Texas for Starship Mars rocket | Space
Elon Musk's space company is hiring "offshore operations engineers" to help develop floating spaceports for Starship , its next-gen transportation system designed to take people to and from the moon, Mars and anywhere on Earth they want to go.
"SpaceX is building floating, superheavy-class spaceports for Mars, moon & hypersonic travel around Earth," Musk said via Twitter Tuesday (June 16), in response to a tweet that drew attention to the SpaceX hiring notice .
