The Biggest Robot Companies And Their Most Scary Inventions

Robots – some of us love them, some of us worry they are going to take our jobs, and some of us are worried they are going to take over the world.

* * *

The first commercial, industrial robots were often immobile, fixed in place, and focused on one task, often working on a production line. Today, however, we're increasingly likely to find them walking on two legs just like us, move around on caterpillar tracks, or even flying through the skies. Some of them are put to work, carrying out boring, repetitive or dangerous tasks to save us from having to do them ourselves. And some exist purely for our own entertainment or gratification.

Watch an army of Spot and Pepper robots cheerlead a baseball game in an empty stadium –

NPB games are known for engaging antics that extend well beyond the play on the field. But what's to be done in the era of COVID-19, when baseball is played in front of an empty stadium? For many — including Korea's KBO League and the upcoming shortened MLB season — cardboard cutouts are an attempt to bring something familiar to the otherwise surreal experience.

Japan, on the other hand, is leaning into the surreality. The Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks are getting some cheerleading help from a couple of familiar robots. SoftBank's own Pepper and Spot (of the SoftBank-owned Boston Dynamics) formed the cheering section at a game this week, as the NPB team took on the Rakuten Eagles. The celebration is the first of many, running through the end of the month.

Robotic scientists will 'speed up discovery' - BBC News

"It can work autonomously, so I can run experiments from home," explained Benjamin Burger, one of the developers.

The robotic scientist is currently embarking on a series of tests to find a catalyst that could speed up the reaction that takes place inside solar cells.

But it could, according to Prof Andy Cooper, the materials scientist who has put the robot to work in his lab, be used in the fight against Covid-19.

Remote-controlled robots to join FamilyMart's workforce this summer | The Japan Times

Japanese konbini : Eternal beacons of hope. Source of whacky culinary delights. Home of the ever-lingering fax machine and, now, humanoid robot staff.

This summer, convenience store chain FamilyMart plans to introduce remote-controlled robots into some of its Tokyo-area stores, according to a June 30 press release.

Quite a lot has been going on:

Mowing robots developed to get rid of pesticides

Old Clint Brauer had a farm, as the song goes, and on that farm and its 5,500 square feet of vegetable-growing greenhouses, there was a fleet of 10 robot farm hands … with a (insert R2-D2 sound) here, and a (insert BB-8 sound) here, here a … okay, you get it.

Brauer is the owner of not just the working, family farm, but also the co-founder of Greenfield Robotics, which welcomes folks to its very 21st century website with the following: "Healthy Food, Healthy Planet / Farming made regenerative. Chemical-free. Carbon captured."

Shoppers Will Interact With Robots, But Do Have Limits

Machines comb mounds of data to personalize engagements. Augmented and virtual realities replicate the physical experience online. Robots streamline fulfillment operations in warehouses. Technology is more embedded in commerce than ever before and will continue to be further integrated. However, consumers' comfort levels with new technologies vary depending on the application and its perceived level of intrusiveness.

Robots, in particular, have been in the spotlight during the COVID-19 pandemic as businesses attempt to eliminate human-to-human contact to reduce the spread of the virus. Robots can be leveraged across the entire retail experience from packing items in warehouses to guiding consumers in stores to delivering products to homes.

Festo’s latest biomimetic robots are a flying feathered bird and ball-bottomed helper arm

Festo already has a flying bird robot — I wrote about it almost 10 years ago . They even made a flying bat as a follow-up. But the BionicSwift is more impressive than both because, in an effort to more closely resemble its avian inspiration, it flies using artificial feathers.

The articulating lamellae allow the wing to work like a bird’s, forming a powerful scoop on the downstroke to push against the air, but separating on the upstroke to produce less resistance. Everything is controlled on-board, including the indoor positioning system that the bird was ostensibly built to demonstrate. Flocks of BionicSwifts can fly in close quarters and avoid each other using an ultra wideband setup.
