It was just five days before Hallowe’en when Jim Blackwood, a 25-year-old constable at the RCMP detachment in the Town of Clarenville, got a report of a strange aircraft hovering over Random Island.
In an interview with SaltWire in 2016, Blackwood said he assumed it was a simple case of someone letting their imagination get the better of them.

“I went down and the craft was hovering between Clarenville and Random Island, right on the water. It was only a couple of hundred feet off the water. It was there for good two hours before it left,” Blackwood told SaltWire.

The April 2020 release by the Pentagon of recordings from US Navy fighter jets of mysterious objects in the sky prompted much discussion around the world, some serious, about what to do if one encounters a UFO.

On September 14, Defense Minister Kōno Tarō announced new protocols for members of the Self-Defense Forces. He said that they should make every effort to report UFO encounters, make recordings if possible, and conduct necessary analysis. This came despite his April statement that he did not really believe in UFOs.

In September 2020, US UFO sightings were reported to either the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC) or the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) — while there is overlap, some reports are only in one database or the other.
Numbers below are as reported on MUFON, which collect citizen reports and catalog them by date, location, shape, and when reported.

A FAMILY were left shocked after what they believe was a UFO hovering above them as they sat in their garden in Shoebury on Monday.
Kelly Wells, 40, says she thought the "unidentified flying object" she saw was a Chinese lantern at first, until it starting darting backwards and forwards, and getting brighter.
She, said: "We were just in shock. We saw it two nights in a row. At first I thought it was a Chinese lantern and I said 'wow look at that! Blimey, it’s coming towards us, isn’t it bright?!' and then it darted back.
