Questions linger over 1954 UFO sighting | Gananoque Reporter

Questions linger over 1954 UFO sighting | Gananoque Reporter

Now on with the stories: Let me take you back to the year 1954. Not counting the RCAF base in North Bay, there were only two airports in Northern Ontario; one in Porquis Junction and the other in Earlton. Highway 11B (now Highway 101) ended in Timmins. There were wide expanses of remote nothingness.

At about 9:30, George ran in saying, “Come quick! Do you want to see something strange? It just might be a flying saucer!” He had been watching the phenomenon for three or four minutes already. Quickly, all three couples went outside with a pair of binoculars to view the strange, brilliant, reddish-orange ball of light that appeared to be about eight or 10 miles away. The object kept dipping up and down, while swooping over the trees.

Best weather photos: Royal Meteorological Society Weather Photographer of the Year competition

The Royal Meterological Society's annual Weather Photographer of the Year competition has produced some stunning snapshots of storms, sunrises and spectacular weather around the world.

"Baikal Treasure": A frozen-over Lake Baikal, in Russia, provided the combination of ice hummocks, a snow cover, and noon lighting that made this shot the Public Favourite of the competition.

"El Chalten". One of the many gems on the shortlist. Shot in Argentina, the photographer told RMETS he had been stunned by the lenticular cloud – a rare formation often mistaken for UFOs.

'UFO cloud' spotted over Sussex | Eastbourne Herald

Melissa French snapped the spooky sight at around 8.45pm yesterday (August 30) above her home in Cumberland Road, Sidley.

* * *

"I wasn't sure what to make of it to be honest as it looked peculiar; the shape of it made me think of a UFO, so I took a photo of it and posted it on Facebook.

Melissa's friend suggested it was a fallstreak hole: a weather phenomenon created by ice crystals forming in a patch of certain types of cloud.
