Researchers design virtual environment to spur development of helpful home robots | VentureBeat

Without much prior experience, kids can recognize other people's intentions and come up with plans to help them achieve their goals, even in novel scenarios. By contrast, even the most sophisticated AI systems to date still struggle with basic social interactions.

The concept of embodied AI draws on embodied cognition , the theory that many features of psychology — human or otherwise — are shaped by aspects of the entire body of an organism. By applying this logic to AI, researchers hope to improve the performance of AI systems like chatbots, robots, autonomous vehicles, and even smart speakers that interact with their environments, people, and other AI.

It's time to rethink the legal treatment of robots | MIT Technology Review

A pandemic is raging with devastating consequences, and long-standing problems with racial bias and political polarization are coming to a head. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to help us deal with these challenges. However, AI's risks have become increasingly apparent.

Consider the American tax system . AI and people are engaging in the same sorts of commercially productive activities—but the businesses for which they work are taxed differently depending on who, or what, does the work. For instance, automation allows businesses to avoid employer wage taxes. So if a chatbot costs a company as much as before taxes as an employee who does the same job (or even a bit more), it actually costs the company less to automate after taxes.

Boston Dynamics dog-like Spot robot can recharge on its own now

Boston Dynamics, the robotics firm once owned by Alphabet's Google and now part of Japan's tech heavyweight investor Softbank , just gave its dog-like robot Spot an upgrade.

Spot now features a recharging station that the robot can use to power up on its own, which Boston Dynamics CEO Robert Playter told CNBC's Squawk Box on Wednesday allows the robot to cover a much broader range, and be located in more remote locations.

Spot also now has access to an arm that allows the robot to perform tasks such as opening doors or drawers, adjusting valves and flipping a power switch.

Robots to feed students, staff at Oregon State University | News | kptv.com

CORVALLIS, OR (KPTV) - Robots with bright orange flags will soon roam Oregon State University's more than 500-acre campus in Corvallis.

The fleet of 20 delivery robots will bring food to students, staff, and faculty members, carrying up to 20 pounds of grub per trip.

The university had been planning to use the robots long before the COVID-19 pandemic, according to university officials.

Representatives from Starship Technologies, the company that produces the robots, were on campus when it first shut down due to coronavirus. The pandemic delayed negotiations but ultimately provided another reason to bring the service to campus.

"This was a long time coming," Kerry Paterson, director of residential dining and University Catering with UHDS, said. "We'd been considering contactless delivery for a while."

Robot enters fight against COVID-19 | Connecting Vets

A robot initially designed for shipboard firefighting and maintenance tasks has now been enlisted in the fight against COVID-19.

The decontamination robot was funded by the Office of Naval Research and designed by several local universities. It was recently tested in Richmond, Virginia.

The robot has four wheels and a mechanical arm that uses shortwave ultraviolet light to decontaminate surfaces. The current version requires humans to oversee and "drive" the robot, but the hope is that the robot will become fully autonomous.
