Microbial space travel on a molecular scale: How extremophilic bacteria survive in space for one

Galactic cosmic and solar UV radiation, extreme vacuum, temperature fluctuations: how can microbes exposed to these challenges in space survive? Scientists investigated how the space-surviving microbes could physically survive the transfer from one celestial body to another.

The extremophilic bacterium Deinococcus radiodurans withstands the drastic influence of outer space: galactic cosmic and solar UV radiation, extreme vacuum, temperature fluctuations, desiccation, freezing, and microgravity. Space travel breakthrough: NASA can send humans to Mars and 'save millions' going

But heading out farther into the solar system, to worlds like Mars, will require better technology.

Chemical propulsion is too costly and inefficient for longterm missions that will require large amounts of cargo to ship between Earth and Mars.

Because of this, scientists at NASA are exploring ways in which nuclear power and solar propulsion can be implemented into future endeavours.

Former NASA administrator Daniel Goldin has recently mirrored this sentiment when he argued "it's time to grow up" and go nuclear.

'Moonbase 8' Review: Showtime Comedy Is TV's Latest Space Oddity - Rolling Stone

How, exactly, did we arrive at Peak Astronaut TV? Especially since all of these series were developed and produced well before this perilous moment in history, when simply leaving the house can feel as risky as sitting atop a rocket bound for orbit. There’s something scary in the air right now, but how did the people behind this work sense it a year or two ago?

Moonbase 8 at least feels timely, if not especially funny, since its subject matter is about the psychological challenge of prolonged isolation from all but a handful of people. When the season begins, Cap (Reilly), Skip (Armisen), and Rook (Heidecker) have been on assignment for more than 200 days. They are bored, frustrated, and only vaguely competent. (And most of that skill is via NASA legacy Skip, where Cap and Rook come across like each won the job via a scratch-off lottery.)
