Why This Week’s Two-Day ‘Cold Christmas Moon’ Is The 13th, Final And Highest Full Moon Of The Year

Next week's full "Cold Moon" will be the 13th and final full Moon of 2020, but it will also be visible on two different days, be the first full Moon of a new astronomical season and the highest in Earth's night sky.

It's the full Moon of December—also called the "Long Nights Moon" in North America and, since it occurs just after Christmas Day, the "Moon After Yule" in Europe.

Many things are taking place:

The moon has way (way) more craters than we thought | Space

Yet these "fossils" can vary dramatically in size and shape, and they can overlap and erode over time. This makes identifying and dating them extremely difficult and time-consuming. The process is also subjective, leading to inconsistencies among existing databases.

Yang and her team approached these issues with machine learning. They trained a deep neural network (where a computer uses layers of mathematical calculations that feed into each other) with data from thousands of previously identified craters and taught the algorithm to find new ones. The network was then applied to data collected by the Chang'e-1 and Chang'e-2 lunar orbiters, revealing 109,956 additional craters on the moon's surface.

Tardigrades may have taken over the Moon

In April 2019 , the Israeli Beresheet spacecraft crash-landed on the Moon . Along for the ride were thousands of tiny creatures, which scientists now think may have spilled out and littered the lunar surface .

But the spacecraft carrying the tardigrades didn't land on the Moon according to plan, instead crashing on the lunar surface and losing contact with ground control.

Researchers identify over 109,000 impact craters on moon : The Tribune India

An international team of researchers has identified over 1,09,000 previously unrecognised impact craters on the moon using machine learning methods.

The study, led by researchers from Jilin University, was published in the journal Nature Communications.

Impact craters are the most prominent lunar surface feature and occupy most of the moon's surface.

With traditional automatic identification methods, it is generally difficult to find irregular and seriously degraded impact craters that may have formed in the early periods.

Dealing with dust: A back-to-the-moon dilemma - SpaceNews

If the political, technical and budgetary stars align for NASA and its partners in coming years, the moon could be the go-to place as the century unfolds. Astronauts would again explore Earth's celestial next-door neighbor, perhaps setting in motion future mining endeavors to extract ices likely lurking in sunlight-shy craters for processing into water, oxygen, and rocket propellant. Humans that "settle in" on the moon could well be a future prospect.

The next chapter in the U.S. human exploration of the moon, the Artemis Project, will dispatch crews there for extended periods of time, building upon Apollo's heritage. Between 1969 and the end of 1972, a dozen astronauts kicked up the powdery regolith, the topside dirt of the moon. But there's one flash back message from the Apollo moonwalkers worth heeding: the place is a Disneyland of dust.

Dharmendra told ANI he bought the land on the moon as he wanted to do something special for his wife on their eighth wedding anniversary.

“It was our wedding anniversary on December 24. I wanted to do something special for her. Everyone gifts earthly possessions like cars and jewellery, but I wanted to do something different. Therefore, I purchased land on the moon for her,” he said.
