A giant black hole keeps evading detection and scientists can't explain it | Space

Supermassive black holes are thought to lurk at the hearts of most, if not all, galaxies. Our own Milky Way has one as massive as 4 million suns, for example, and M87's — the only black hole ever imaged directly — tips the scales at a whopping 2.4 billion solar masses.

The big galaxy at the core of the cluster Abell 2261, which lies about 2.7 billion light-years from Earth, should have an even larger central black hole — a light-gobbling monster that weighs as much as 3 billion to 100 billion suns, astronomers estimate from the galaxy's mass. But the exotic object has evaded detection so far.

Supermassive Black Hole's Dust Ring May Be Casting Shadows From Heart of a Galaxy

This Hubble Space Telescope image of the heart of nearby active galaxy IC 5063 reveals a mixture of bright rays and dark shadows coming from the blazing core, home of a supermassive black hole. Astronomers suggest that a ring of dusty material surrounding the black hole may be casting its shadow into space. According to their scenario, this interplay of light and shadow may occur when light blasted by the monster black hole strikes the dust ring, which is buried deep inside the core.

Some of the most stunning views of our sky occur at sunset, when sunlight pierces the clouds, creating a mixture of bright and dark rays formed by the clouds’ shadows and the beams of light scattered by the atmosphere.

Bad Astronomy | Dark matter may be primordial black holes according to new research

It's possible that dark matter is made of tiny black holes created at the very beginning of time by nucleation from bubbles of false vacuum that created baby universes containing sub-lunar masses of matter during an infinitesimally brief period of cosmic hyperinflation.

Mysterious cosmic object swallowed by black hole baffles astronomers

A visualization two black holes in the process of spiraling together and merging, emitting gravitational waves. The orange bands show the highest amounts of radiation from the system. The merger, observed by the LIGO and Virgo gravitational-wave detectors on August 14th, 2019, revealed that the smaller object is about 2.6 times the mass of the sun—a mysterious size that could reveal the border between a neutron star and a black hole.

About 800 million light-years away , a black hole devoured an unidentified object, and the resulting cosmic merger released enough energy to wrinkle the fabric of spacetime . These wrinkles, called gravitational waves, traveled through the universe and eventually washed over Earth on August 14, 2019.
