The combined COVID-19 relief and federal spending bill passed late last year includes an unusual request: U.S. intelligence agencies have 180 days to tell Congress what they know about unidentified aerial phenomena, or UFOs.
Agencies also have to explain how they collect data and analyze encounters with UFOs, and if the objects pose a threat to national security. Seth Shostak , an astronomer at SETI Institute, says government programs investigating UFOs date back to the early to mid-1950s.

U.S. intelligence officials have 180 days to release information on UFOs | KTLA
U.S. intelligence agencies have six months to release all of the information they have on UFOs. So why now? It’s all thanks to the $2.3-trillion COVID-19 relief and government spending bill signed in December.
The provision was tucked into the committee comment section of the Intelligence Authorization Act for the 2021 fiscal year. That act was contained in the overall relief bill.
Now, intelligence officials have about 180 days from the signing of the bill to give an unclassified report about the aircrafts. The report needs to contain analysis of any UFO data as well as name any possible security threats they pose.

The report revealed the existence of a program called AATIP – Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program – and it put a video into the public eye 13 years after an encounter with a UFO was captured during a military mission off the coast of Southern California.
From the shadows into the light -- the man who broke the UFO embargo | Human Interest |
SARASOTA, Fla. — From his post as a senior intelligence officer for the Secretary of Defense, Luis Elizondo knew by 2017 he had two choices: 1) make peace with silence and continue sitting on the Cold War's deepest secret, or 2) resign from a career he loved in order to fulfill his duty to serve the United States.
The dilemma: How to bypass obstructionists in the Pentagon in order to deliver the most accurate information available to top military leadership regarding a potential national security threat. The problem: That potential threat involved unidentified flying objects (UFOs), perhaps the most ridiculed and marginalized issue of our time.
