'Oumuamua: Avi Loeb says it may have been… | The Planetary Society

Could the first object shown to have originated outside our solar system be a light sail built by an alien civilization? That's the very controversial hypothesis put forward by distinguished Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb in his new book Extraterrestrial . The book is about much more than 'Oumuamua, and so is Avi's conversation with Mat Kaplan.

Imagine if the Huygens probe had landed on Earth at the same latitude and longitude at which it landed on Titan. It would have come down in an ocean. Name one of the islands or island groups closest to its splashdown.

'Resident Alien' on Syfy shows the mark of Steven Spielberg - Los Angeles Times

Developed as a dramedy by Chris Sheridan, the Syfy series performs the surgeries necessary to turn paneled page into effective television — adding new sources of pressure and relief, making characters more colorful and relationships more complicated — without amputating the source material. The results are good; whatever critical nitpicking I did along the way — it's a compulsion as well as a career — I thoroughly enjoyed the seven episodes (out of 10) available for review.

The setting has been changed from the Pacific Northwest to Colorado, oddly, given that the show, set in a mountainous, snowbound small town called Patience, has obviously been filmed in British Columbia. In any case, the location, and the fact that the eponymous alien, a Fish Out of Water known here only as Harry Vanderspiegle (Tudyk), finds himself drafted as the new town doctor when the old town doctor is found mysteriously dead, bring in a hint of "Northern Exposure.

How two space-exploration projects are using the Arctic to stand in for extraterrestrial

A recently completed project saw Greenland stand in for the Moon. Another is using Iceland as a substitute for Mars.

If you want to get an idea of what Mars looks like, a good place to start, ironically, is Google Earth.

The service provides highly detailed, first-person views of parts of Devon Island , in Nunavut, a place that the U.S. space agency NASA, among others, has described as providing earth-bound scientists with the closest thing they can get to Mars without leaving home.

A Fallen Rising Star - Eos

With the passing of a veteran scientist, we can afford ourselves the satisfaction of looking back upon a fruitful scientific career; one with a long record of success in expanding the boundaries of our collective knowledge. Losing a young colleague before they hit their stride is a double blow. We are left bereft of both the pleasure of their company and the scientific progress that their research might have brought.

Such is the case with Ms. Marzieh ("Mari") Foroutan, a promising young graduate student from the University of Waterloo, Canada, who was forging her own path when it was tragically cut short. Mari was lost to us when the commercial airplane in which she was flying was shot from the sky above Iran on the 8 January 2020.

(NEXSTAR) – In a new interview, Harvard physicist Avi Loeb says there’s a “serious possibility” that an interstellar object that passed through Earth’ solar system could be an alien spacecraft.

In a new interview with Salon , Loeb defended his hypothesis, asserting that “perhaps ‘Oumuamua was artificial, definitely not made by us.”

“I would say, given everything we know, I would give a high likelihood that it could have been artificially made,” he said.
