Watching the Skies: Moon passes Mars this week | WOODTV.com

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The waxing moon will pass by Mars through the middle of this week ahead of the full moon next week.

On the evenings of Jan. 19 through Jan. 21, look to the south to see the moon and Mars. Mars will be above the moon all three evenings.

Mars is nowhere close to appearing as bright as it was last fall. Still, it will be easily visible with the naked eye. You may be able to see Uranus below Mars, though it is currently about 150 times less bright than Mars. The two planets will be in conjunction on Jan. 20.

Search for 12-year-old boy swept to sea Half Moon Bay

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Department told KCBS Radio the missing boy, along with an adult male and another eight-year-old, were standing on the beach south of Half Moon Bay, when they were swept away about 100 yards offshore   by a wave around 3:45 p.m.

The adult and eight-year-old managed to wash up on shore, but the 12-year-old male is still missing.

Images posted with the tweet show that emergency responders, firefighters and at least one helicopter unit were on the scene conducting the search.

NASA's SLS Rocket to the Moon Faces Setback After Test - The New York Times

After billions of dollars and a decade of work, NASA's plans to send astronauts back to the moon had a new setback on Saturday. A planned eight-minute test firing of the four engines of a new mega rocket needed for the moon missions came to an abrupt end after only about a minute.

As engineers disentangle what went wrong, the first launch of the rocket is likely to slip further into the future, and NASA astronauts may have to wait longer before setting foot on the moon again.

Moon urges Biden to learn from Trump's N. Korea diplomacy

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea's president on Monday urged the incoming Biden administration to build upon the achievements and learn from the failures of President Donald Trump's diplomatic engagement with North Korea.

A dovish liberal and the son of northern war refugees, Moon Jae-in had lobbied hard to help set up Trump's three summits with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, but their diplomacy stalemated over disagreements over easing crippling U.S.-led sanctions for the North's disarmament.

Marvel Villains Ethan Hawke Could Be Playing In Moon Knight

Ethan Hawke has signed up as Moon Knight 's main villain , an exciting casting decision that means the show will certainly not be short of star power. Although Hawke is an accomplished action actor, this is actually his first foray into a comic book adaptation - a genre he's historically been critical of. Still, as the first two episodes of WandaVision proved, the MCU's Disney+ TV shows are hardly your typical superhero adventures.

* * *

The first reports are silent as to just who Hawke could be playing, although naturally, the internet is abuzz with speculation. Here are some of the most likely candidates, who could work well as the main antagonist of Moon Knight .

Apollo landers and Neil Armstrong's bootprint on the moon now protected by US law

On Dec. 31, the One Small Step to Protect Human Heritage in Space Act became law. As far as laws go, it's pretty benign. It requires companies that are working with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration on lunar missions to agree to be bound by otherwise unenforceable guidelines intended to protect American landing sites on the Moon. That's a pretty small pool of affected entities.

I am a lawyer who focuses on space issues that seek to ensure the peaceful and sustainable exploration and use of space. I believe that people can achieve world peace through space. To do so, we must recognize landing sites on the Moon and other celestial bodies as the universal human achievements they are, built on the research and dreams of scientists and engineers spanning centuries on this globe.

December 2020: The Next Full Moon is the Wolf Moon – NASA Solar System Exploration

The next full Moon will be Tuesday evening, December 29, 2020, appearing opposite the Sun in Earth-based longitude at 10:28 PM EST. This is close enough to midnight that the full Moon will be on the next day in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), so many calendars will show the full Moon on December 30, 2020. The Moon will appear full for about three days around this time, from Monday evening through Thursday morning.

In the 1930's the Maine Farmer's Almanac began publishing "Indian" names for the full Moons, tying these names to the European months. I tie these Moon names to the seasons rather than months (for reasons I have explained in earlier postings), so the names I use will be off a month from other sources until the summer of 2021.
