7 exoplanets orbiting TRAPPIST-1 are like peas in a pod | Space

The seven rocky planets orbiting the red dwarf star TRAPPIST-1 have remarkably similar densities, suggesting they likely have similar compositions, too.

Located about 40 light-years from Earth, TRAPPIST-1 hosts seven rocky planets that are about the size of Earth or smaller — the largest group of roughly Earth-size planets ever found in a single stellar system.

Earlier studies measured the mass and diameter of the TRAPPIST-1 planets, and found they are rocky, or terrestrial, like Earth. However, a new study measured the density of the rocky worlds in greater precision, suggesting that all of the planets are about 8% less dense than Earth, according to a statement from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

High schoolers help discover 4 new alien planets | Space

Two Massachusetts high schoolers — 16-year-old Kartik Pinglé and 18-year-old Jasmine Wright — have helped discover four new alien planets , a new study reports.

"By the end of the program, the students can say they've done active, state-of-the-art research in astrophysics," SRMP director Clara Sousa-Silva, a cosmochemist at MIT, said in a CfA statement . 

Pinglé and Wright worked with Tansu Daylan, a postdoctoral researcher at MIT's Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research and the lead author of the new paper. Daylan and his colleagues — the study has dozens of co-authors — scrutinized observations of the sunlike star HD 108236 made by NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS).

Two Massachusetts high schoolers are getting praised for making a major astronomical discovery — finding four new planets outside our Solar System.

Five Giant Planets Orbit Nearby Sun-Like Star | Astronomy | Sci-News.com

Astronomers using ESA's CHaracterising ExOPlanet Satellite (CHEOPS) have discovered a fifth planet around the bright, Sun-like star HD 108236.

HD 108236 is a star of spectral and luminosity type G3V located 211 light-years away in the southern constellation of Centaurus.

Also known as TOI-1233, TIC 260647166, and HIP 60689, the star is 12% smaller than our Sun and 13% less massive.

In 2020, four large planets were discovered around HD 108236 using data from NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS).
