Astronomy surveys aim to up the pace with army of tiny robots | Science | AAAS

Hundreds of fibers, arranged by hand, capture light at the Sloan Digital Sky Survey's New Mexico telescope.

It was one of the stranger and more monotonous jobs in astronomy: plugging optical fibers into hundreds of holes in aluminum plates. Every day, technicians with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) prepped up to 10 plates that would be placed that night at the focus of the survey's telescopes in Chile and New Mexico. The holes matched the exact positions of stars, galaxies, or other bright objects in the telescopes' view.

How modern robots are developed | EurekAlert! Science News

Today, neuroscience and robotics are developing hand in hand. Mikhail Lebedev, Academic Supervisor at HSE University's Centre for Bioelectric Interfaces, spoke about how studying the brain inspires the development of robots.

Robots are interesting to neuroscience and neuroscience is interesting to robots - this is what the article 'Neuroengineering challenges of fusing robotics and neuroscience' was about in the journal Science Robotics . Such collaborative development contributes to progress in both fields, bringing us closer to developing more advanced android robots and a deeper understanding of the structure of the human brain.

How To Maintain A Sense Of Humanity As Robots Progress | KJZZ

STEVE GOLDSTEIN:  Ed Finn is director of ASU's Center for Science and the Imagination, and is with me to talk about robots. So, Ed, why have robots appealed to us for so long and played such a part in fiction and pop culture and now increasingly in daily activities?

GOLDSTEIN: So one of the things that often comes up with the concept of robots or some sort of creation, as you said, playing God, is how much of the actual human element of who we are goes into a robot — whether a robot can actually have feelings or develop closeness and that sort of thing. You mentioned making new friends.

Universal Robots' Safety Expert Recognized in '20 Exceptional Women in Robotics and Automation'

Roberta Nelson Shea joined Universal Robots as Global Technical Compliance Officer in 2016. She is recognized as a global authority on robotic safety standards and has long blazed the trail for women in a traditionally male-dominated industry. (Photo: Business Wire)

"From an engineering and management standpoint, women were and continue to be in the minority in the robotics industry. Fortunately, we are starting to see this slowly changing," she says. "Since joining UR, I see more female engineers in software development, coding and user interface than I saw before."

The Delivery Robot Market Report

The idea of robots freely moving around cities has long been a staple of science fiction. And though it is cliché to say, that vision of science fiction is closer than ever to becoming actual reality.

One area that presents major opportunities for robotics is food delivery. We may still be a ways away from full-sized autonomous vehicles shuttling humans around, but robots and autonomous vehicles are already delivering pizzas, burritos, and groceries around towns and colleges in the U.S.
