GPS Coordinates Fly to Mars — JPL Seeks Extraterrestrial Communication Link - Inside GNSS -

The parachute deployed during the descent of the Mars Perseverance rover carried a special message for anyone who happened to be looking up from the Red Planet’s surface on February 18, 2021. "Dare Mighty Things," it spelled out in orange and white strips piecing out its 21-meter (70-foot) diameter, for the reading edification of any being or beings familiar with binary code.

Systems engineer Ian Clark at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA’s) Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) had been entrusted with the parachute’s design and told to devise a special pattern in the fabric so other NASA flight engineers could tell how the parachute was oriented during descent. Clark took it upon himself to turn it into a secret message ("super fun," he said), and only five other people were in the know.

Garth Weiser Explores the Limits of Technical Wizardry

In an essay included in the catalogue accompanying the exhibition Garth Weiser: Paintings, 2008-2017 , organized by the Contemporary Austin and curated by Louis Grachos, Weiser (quoted by Charles Wylie) says of his paintings: "The surface and the bottom really fight with each other."

That dynamic, which is less apparent in the exhibition Garth Weiser , at Casey Kaplan (January 28–March 6, 2021), is what I want to examine.

In earlier works, Weiser superimposed one kind of abstraction (geometric) on another (gestural), binding together image, form, and texture in ways that were riveting, if not also visually astringent.

First 'space helicopter' set to take to Martian skies

When NASA's Perseverance rover touches down next week, it will carry one of the strangest devices ever seen on Mars — a drone destined to make the first controlled flights on an extraterrestrial planet.

Dubbed "Ingenuity," the drone weighs just 4 pounds, and it will stay stored beneath the rover's belly while Perseverance runs through its initial surface checks and experiments.

But about the middle of April, the rover will scout out a flat area without large rocks to deploy the drone, and soon after that Perseverance will release Ingenuity to make the first flights on Mars.

Review: 'Cherry' struggles to find a rhythm that serves its story

After directing four consecutive Marvel Cinematic Universe films, including the movie that stands as the No. 1 box office film of all time, "The Avengers: Endgame," it's not difficult to see why brothers and Cleveland natives Joe and Anthony Russo would be looking for something different.

In "Cherry," a film based on the semiautobiographical book by former Army medic, fellow Clevelander and federal prisoner Nico Walker, the Russos have traveled as far away from space and wondrous extraterrestrial worlds as possible. They're now in the gritty landscape of their backyard.
