A couple of weeks later, entering Skylight Books in Los Feliz , my eye was caught by the sunny yellow cover of “Desert Oracle, Vol. 1,” a new hardcover collecting the best of Layne’s writing to date, staring back brightly from a display stand.

Having made the connection, I bought the book. After reading it, a little per night, I returned to Skylight to buy the latest issue of the 40-page journal, likewise with a yellow cover, stapled on the side and resembling a desert field guide or punk zine.
