Postmates X, the robotics division of the on-demand delivery startup that Uber acquired last year for $2.65 billion , has officially spun out as an independent company called Serve Robotics.

Serve Robotics, a name taken from the autonomous sidewalk delivery bot that was developed and piloted by Postmates X, has raised seed funding in a round led by venture capital firm Neo. Other investors included Uber as well as Lee Jacobs and Cyan Banister’s Long Journey Ventures, Western Technology Investment, Scott Banister, Farhad Mohit and Postmates co-founders Bastian Lehmann and Sean Plaice.

'Farms are going to need different kinds of robots' - BBC News
On a lush, green patch of rolling farmland in Australia's Queensland, cows are quietly grazing in a scene that is replicated around the world.
A closer inspection, however, would reveal that these particular bovines are a bit more high-tech than normal.
Behind one ear, each carries a device roughly the size of a matchbox - a tamper-proof, solar-powered, satellite-connected smart "tag" that is constantly transmitting real-time data back to the farmer.
Unity demos how synthetic data helps robots learn
Unity is showcasing how its AI and machine learning capabilities could benefit industrial robotics. The new demo, called Object Pose Estimation , demonstrates how synthetic data can help robots learn rather than be programmed.
Training data is collected in Unity and used to train a deep neural network that predicts the pose of a cube. This model is then deployed in a simulated robot pick-and-place task . The Object Pose Estimation demo succeeds the release of Unity's URDF Importer, an open-source Unity package for importing a robot into a Unity scene from its URDF file that takes advantage of enhanced support for articulations in Unity for more realistic kinematic simulations, and Unity's ROS-TCP-Connector.
Through cold and COVID: Robots roam on campus at local college
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — Spend a few minutes on campus at Bridgewater State University and it won't long before a white robot comes rolling by to make a delivery.
"Last week alone we had 750 deliveries, the numbers are going up and up," said Karen Jason, Vice President for Operations, Bridgewater State University.

"We have Starbucks as you mentioned, we have a grill, pizza station, salad. Drinks beverages, desserts, anything like that," said Staci DeSimone, Sodexo General Manager.

Insect-Inspired Flying Robots: Researchers Introduce a New Generation of Tiny, Agile Drones
Insects’ remarkable acrobatic traits help them navigate the aerial world, with all of its wind gusts, obstacles, and general uncertainty. Such traits are also hard to build into flying robots — but MIT Assistant Professor Kevin Yufeng Chen has built a system that approaches insects’ agility. Credit: courtesy of Kevin Yufeng Chen
The technology could boost aerial robots’ repertoire, allowing them to operate in cramped spaces and withstand collisions.
Real estate group in Las Vegas launches fully autonomous security robot
LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — A new spin to security. The Westland Real Estate Group has launched a fully autonomous security robot at its Liberty Village Apartments in northeast Last Vegas.
The security robot is the first in the world to be used in a multi-family residence in an effort to improve the safety and security of residents.
Scientists build robot that 'hears' through the ear of a dead locust - CNET
The robot receives electrical signals through the ear. It's programmed to respond to sounds, so one clap triggers the robot to move forward. Two claps sends it backward.
Integrating biological systems with robots has some potential advantages over going full robotic, particularly when it comes to energy consumption. "They are miniature, and therefore also extremely economical and efficient," Maoz said.

A joint research team co-led by City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has developed a new soft tactile sensor with skin-comparable characteristics. A robotic gripper with the sensor mounted at the fingertip could accomplish challenging tasks such as stably grasping fragile objects and threading a needle. Their research provided new insight into tactile sensor design and could contribute to various applications in the robotics field, such as smart prosthetics and human-robot interaction.
