Elon Musk, Starlink look to stars to fill internet broadband gaps, including across Western Pa.
Dictated by the peaks and dips of Western Pennsylvania’s rolling landscape, internet service is often spotty — even nonexistent — for thousands of people based on topography and a lack of infrastructure for high-speed internet services.
But an ambitious project by billionaire Elon Musk promises lofty goals for those struggling with broadband inequities, which have been highlighted during the covid-19 pandemic as school and work largely moved online.

The outer bounds of big questions | MIT Technology Review
Christopher Rose '79, SM '81, PhD '85, earned three MIT degrees in electrical engineering but has always been drawn to many disciplines. As a professor of engineering at Brown University, he's working at the frontiers of communications theory, while as an administrator, he's striving to enhance student and faculty diversity across STEM disciplines.
Born and raised in Harlem, Rose started plotting his education at age five. "I asked my dad: What's the best place to learn science and math and stuff? And he said MIT," he recalls. Upon graduation, he was a researcher at Bell Laboratories before moving on to academic positions at Rutgers, MIT (as a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Visiting Professor), and finally Brown.
10K Hackers Defend the Planet Against Extraterrestrials
Extraterrestrial hackers pelted Earth with a hideous array of cyberattacks in a nefarious effort to take over the planet -- and during Earth Day celebrations, no less. Fortunately, thousands of volunteer security defenders were at the ready to save the planet.
So goes the tale of " Cyber Apocalypse 2021 ," the first capture-the-flag (CTF) competition that Hack the Box (HTB) opened up to any and all players across the globe. HTB has a dedicated CTF platform, which has been used to host closed CTF events for universities and businesses. As Daphne Deiktaki, Hack the Box's head of marketing, said in an interview before the event, Cyber Apocalypse was different because, "We are inviting absolutely everyone in the world. Anyone can join."

The Mysterious History of Cattle Mutilation - HISTORY
The bovine corpses stunned the ranchers who found them. The animals’ ears, eyes, udders, anuses, sex organs and tongues had routinely been removed, seemingly with a sharp, clean instrument. Their carcasses had been drained of blood. No tracks or footprints were found in the immediate vicinity—nor were any of the usual opportunistic scavengers.
Between April and October of 1975, nearly 200 cases of cattle mutilation were reported in the state of Colorado alone. Far from being mere tabloid fodder, it had become a nationally recognized issue: That year, the Colorado Associated Press voted it the state’s number one story. Colorado’s then-senator Floyd Haskell asked the Federal Bureau of Investigation to get involved.
Baby Yoda toy, from 'The Mandalorian,' visits Iowa fire departments
Baby Yoda normally travels through galaxies far, far away. But recently he's made a few pit stops in Iowa.
Since then, the toy's journey has been documented online by Scappoose resident Tyler Eubanks, who was involved in the original donation.
On April 24, Baby Yoda went on a tour of fire departments around central Iowa, starting with the State Fire Marshal Division. Staff took pictures with the toy showing off their facilities and gave it a ride on a bomb robot, a machine with a controllable arm and thermal imaging used to locate and safely defuse explosives.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — They will be digging out of the ground and with their bright red eyes, large transparent wings, and a shriek that sounds like a mix of static electricity and a maraca, cicadas look like something out of an extraterrestrial movie.
Brood X is the name of the periodical cicadas set to emerge this year from the ground. The cicadas have been laying dormant below the surface for 17 years.
