The asteroid was later formally named 4581 Asclepius, for the Greek god of healing and medicine. It led to a reckoning over how to safeguard the world from harm.

Shortly after the flyby—the closest approach by a large asteroid in a half-century—Congress tasked NASA with detecting and tracking asteroids that could pose a threat. By 2010, the agency had located 90 percent of all asteroids larger than one kilometer in diameter and is still working on finding 90 percent of all rocks wider than 140 meters across.

The Israeli computing solutions that helped land on an asteroid and fly closest to the sun

Ramon.Space was founded in 2003 by President Ran Ginosar Ph.D., CTO Tuvia Liran, and VP Engineering Dov Alon - with a goal to manufacture computers and chips built for the harshness of space. CEO Avi Shabtai said in a conversation with Geektime that Ramon.Space has had a long partnership with the Israel Space Agency. "It was obvious that the computers in space were less developed than the ones on Earth.

Shabtai added that the company was aware of the space travel revolution and understood that "Ramon.Space could offer revolutionary high-performance space computing solutions. Asteroids are small, rocky bodies that can provide clues to the primitive composition of our solar system and how organic material was delivered to Earth. Many of the most primitive asteroids, as represented by primitive meteorites, experienced early heating that led to aqueous alteration of their primary materials. This process is largely thought to be driven by heating from the decay of radioactive elements in asteroid parent bodies.

UCF Research Flies Three-for-Three on Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo Unity | University of

University of Central Florida research has now flown on the first three flights of Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo, VSS Unity, with Saturday's successful launch and landing at Spaceport America in New Mexico.

"It was exhilarating and moving to share the experience with the large group of family and friends of Virgin Galactic employees on hand for the flight," says Josh Colwell, a UCF physics professor who attended the flight and whose project was aboard the spaceplane.

Humans Wiping Out Biodiversity Faster Than Asteroid Explosion That Caused Extinction: Study

About 66 million years ago, an asteroid collided with the Earth causing an explosion equivalent to millions of nuclear weapons detonating simultaneously. The collision wiped out three-fourths of all plant and animal species on Earth. Today, humans are wiping out freshwater gastropods, a group of species of snails and slugs that thrive in freshwater, at a faster rate than the sudden mass extinction event caused by the asteroid, as per a new study .

"66 million years ago, you had an asteroid impact that had an immediate effect on the whole world," said Thomas A Neubauer, an ecologist at Justus Liebig University in Germany and one of the authors of the study, in his statement to Vice . "Right now we have a comparable situation: it’s similarly catastrophic, and the catastrophe is us, humankind," Neubauer added.

NASA's Osiris-Rex spacecraft is returning to Earth

Dhaka: NASA’s Osiris-Rex spacecraft returns to Earth after completing work on the asteroid Bennu. It began its journey on Monday for the purpose of land. It will take 2 years for this robotic hope to come to Earth.

According to Dante Loretta, a scientist at the University of Arizona, the spacecraft can carry large pieces of rock, ranging from half a pound to 1 pound (200g, 400g). However, this may reduce its capacity. It is also capable of carrying an additional 2 cess (60 g). The largest specimen is a stone brought from the Apollo moon. NASA collected dust and air samples. This is the first time such a sample has been collected from an asteroid.

$2M donation to advance UArizona science research program

TUCSON (KVOA) - A University of Arizona alum has made a generous donation of $2 million to support the university's space science research, including the Osiris-REx mission.

Around one and a half million dollars will go towards analyzing the sample that Osiris-REx took from asteroid Bennu, once it returns to earth in September of 2023.

With that sample, researchers are hoping to find out more about the solar system's past, present and future.
