Astronomy: Space travel possible for an astronomical price

Are you a bit stir-crazy from being cooped up this past year? Have you been saving your money for a nice long trip? Well, one company is selling tickets for a ride into outer space this fall. And it will only cost about $250,000.

On May 22, Virgin Galactic had a successful test of its first rocket shuttle, the VSS Unity, to the very top of the atmosphere. The Unity was ferried up to high altitude by the Virgin Mothership (a misnomer if I ever heard one), then released. With rockets on, the Unity went 55 miles above Earth's surface, with just two pilots on board. For comparison, a jet airliner can go up to about 20 miles high.

Civilians From All Over the World Are Racing to Take Part in Space Competitions

The crew will orbit Earth every 90 minutes along a customized flight path — but the journey will be carefully monitored by mission control, according to the company. If all goes to plan, the capsule will splash down in water off the Florida coast.

Jay Peterson, president at Boat Rocker Studios, which is producing the show, told Insider, that the competition hopes to create a platform that democratizes space so that space travel is eventually viewed as an accessible mode of transportation.

Explained: Why NASA is sending water bears and baby squid to the International Space Station |

On June 3, NASA will send 128 glow-in-the-dark baby squids and some 5,000 tardigrades (also called water bears) to the International Space Station for research purposes.

The water animals, which will be launched aboard SpaceX’s 22nd cargo resupply mission to the ISS, are part of experiments that could help scientists design improved protective measures for astronauts going on long-duration space travel. The experiments are also aimed at better understanding how beneficial microbes interact with animals, potentially leading to breakthroughs in improving human health on Earth.

High pricing could impact the viability of space travel

The concept of commercial space travel is no doubt exciting, and this is reflected by high demand for the extremely limited capacity available for upcoming voyages into – and on the edge of – space.

While 2021 is set to be a breakthrough year for commercial space travel, the viability of this hyper-premiumized and ultra-exclusive experience remains unknown.

The concept of commercial space travel is no doubt exciting, and this is reflected by high demand for the extremely limited capacity available for upcoming voyages into – and on the edge of – space. Virgin Galacti c’s spacecraft Unity has garnered 600 reservations for tickets on future voyages, sold at prices between US$200,000 and US$250,000.
