Attention skywatchers: 3 planets become visible in the night sky

ORLANDO, Fla. – Pending clear a sky, space will be putting on a show for us down on Earth as three planets are now visible in the evening..

On Friday, Mars will be the highest in the sky and have a reddish tint, close to the rising moon. Mercury will be in the middle of Mars and Venus. Venus will be the brightest, but very low on the horizon.

The planets will be setting with the sun so you won't have much time after sunset to catch a glimpse of all three together. This is also arguably the best time to see Mercury due to its proximity to the sun. Mercury fades from view again in early June.

The ice giants are migrating very little, and any migration that they undergo is certainly not for the same reason that Earth’s Moon is moving away from us. Many factors affect orbits of large bodies, which are actively fluctuating, if slightly. But two key factors are tidal interactions and the distance between the two bodies.

Earth’s gravity keeps the Moon in orbit around us and the Moon in turn causes the oceans’ tides. The side of Earth that faces the Moon feels a bit more gravity, while the side facing away feels less, creating a slightly oblong Earth. Called tidal bulges, these oblong areas can occur on solid ground, but are most noticeable in the ocean. Earth’s rotation means that the tidal bulge facing the Moon will always be just ahead of the Moon, pulling our natural satellite forward.

Watch the thin crescent moon pass these three planets this week | RochesterFirst

On the evenings of May 12 through May 15, the moon will be in the vicinity of Venus, Mercury and Mars. The thin crescent moon will be low on the horizon by Venus on May 12, just above Mercury on May 13 and next to Mars by May 15.

Make sure you’re looking west after sunset to see the moon and the planets. Venus will be the brightest of the planets, followed by Mercury and then Mars. All three should be visible with the naked eye, though Venus and the moon will be competing with evening twilight on May 12 and may be slightly more difficult to spot.

The Crescent Moon Snuggles Up Close to Several Planets and Awesome Flyovers of the Intl.

The crescent moon will be snugglin’ up real close to several planets over the next few days. First, check the 2nd graphic and the notes at This Week’s Sky at a Glance . This (Wed.) evening, a very thin crescent moon can be seen shortly after sunset. Look a little north of due west. You’ll need a pretty clear view to the horizon. The moon will be next to the planet Venus, which is emerging now as an evening star.

Thursday, find the crescent moon shortly after sunset again looking a little north of due west. To the right of the moon will be the planet Mercury, which is a hard planet to see. It’s often lost in the glare of the sun.

The Sun follows a solitary path through the Milky Way. This cannot be said of a significant fraction of the stars in the galaxy. Many stars have companions—some distant, others quite close.

In the latter case, SF authors crafting a plausible setting may need to take into account the effect of a stellar partner on habitable worlds. For example, the distance between Alpha Centauri A and B varies from 35.6 astronomical units to 11.2 AU. At their closest, A would add about 1 percent to the energy budget of a hypothetical habitable world orbiting B, while B would add 4/10 th of a percent to a similar world around A.
