Lodi winery's grape juice now orbiting space ... for science

A first for the Lodi wine grape region and also the International Space Station: Grape juice is orbiting the Earth.

This is part of an experiment to see if whether grape juice can be fermented in space. Winemakers are told to expect the unexpected when the grape juice returns from its out-of-this-world adventure.

Earth's Stratosphere Is Shrinking Due to Greenhouse-Gas Emissions

That slice of sky — where supersonic jets and weather balloons fly — stretches up to 31 miles above Earth's surface. But according to new research, this layer of the atmosphere has shrunk by a quarter-mile in the last 40 years.

As carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels enters the lowest level of the atmosphere — known as the troposphere — it traps some of the sunlight that hits Earth as that light is being reflected back into space. That's why the planet's temperature is rising. The more emissions rise, the more heat from the sun stays trapped on Earth and the less it can warm the stratosphere as it travels spaceward. So the stratosphere is cooling.

Remember that Chinese spacecraft orbiting Mars? It's set to land a rover today - HTXT.AFRICA

Back in February, Mars was bustling with activity as spacecraft from three countries arrived in its orbit .

Among those craft was the Tianwen-1 from China. That spacecraft has spent the last three months orbiting Mars, but today it’s expected to plonk a rover down on the planet’s surface.

Anybody who has seen NASA land a rover on the Red Planet will know it’s not an easy feat and according to a report by Cnet, China is taking a different approach compared to the US.

Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa to fly to space station this December | Space

The Japanese billionaire, who's already scheduled to fly around the moon in 2023 on SpaceX's Starship vehicle , will visit the International Space Station this December.

If all goes according to plan, Maezawa will launch aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Dec. 8, kicking off a 12-day mission to the orbiting lab organized via Virginia-based company Space Adventures.

Maezawa will be joined on the three-seat Soyuz by Russian cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin and film producer Yozo Hirano, who will document Maezawa's flight.

NASA's James Webb Telescope Opens Mirror on Earth for Last Time Before Orbiting the Sun

The primary mirror of NASA 's next generation James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) opened for the last time on Earth before the expected launch of the observatory on October 31, 2021.

As one of the final tests before the telescope is blasted into space aboard an Ariane 5 rocket from French Guiana in South America, engineers commanded the mirror to fully expand and lock itself into place, just like it will do once in orbit around the sun. The telescope will orbit the sun around a million miles away from Earth.

Astronomers photograph giant exoplanet in unusual large orbit | Space | EarthSky

A giant gas exoplanet in an unusually large orbit has been directly imaged by astronomers via the Young Suns Exoplanet Survey (YSES). It is 20 times as far from its star as Jupiter is from our sun.

Astronomers have discovered many giant planets, similar to Jupiter or Saturn, orbiting other stars. Some of these – called hot Jupiters – are unlike any planets in our solar system, however, circling much closer to their stars than any of our sun’s planets orbit the sun. Hot Jupiters appear to be quite common, even though none exist in our own solar system.

Taming chaos: Scientists get a step closer to solving the 'three-body problem'

A fresh, abstract approach to solving the statistical model for the famous “three-body problem”. This promising idea tackles chaos between co-orbiting bodies by treating space as an eight-dimensional region.

Isaac Newton’s three laws of motion can elegantly describe the basic physics of how things interact in the universe. These equations can be used to describe how Earth orbits the sun or how the moon orbits the Earth.

However, when Newton tried to introduce a third object to a pair of orbiting objects — such as a relationship between Earth, moon, and the sun — his equations broke down.
