Seti: how microbes could communicate with alien species

Seti: how microbes could communicate with alien species

Predrag Slijepcevic received funding from various organisations including Department of Health, EU, Royal Society and British Council.

Are we alone in the universe? The famous Seti (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) programme has been trying to answer this question since 1959. American astronomer Carl Sagan, and many others, believed that other human-like civilisations must exist, and that we could communicate with them. But sceptics are not convinced, arguing the lack of evidence for such civilisations suggests they are exceedingly rare .

Are We Ready To Accept That UFOs Are Real? | Connecticut Public Radio

In 2017, The New York Times uncovered a program at the Defense Department which investigated unidentified flying objects .

This year, the former chair of Harvard's astronomy department published a book arguing that we may recently have been "visited by advanced alien technology from a distant star."

This week, The New Yorker has a long piece on changing attitudes and fading taboos around UFOs.

What does this all mean? Does it matter that these acknowledgements are coming from The New York Times , The New Yorker ... the astronomy department at Harvard?

NSF, NASA Award Funds Astronomer's Planet Formation Research Using Supercomputers

May 12, 2021 — A three-year program at New Mexico State University, funded through the National Science Foundation and NASA, will allow astronomy assistant professor Wladimir Lyra to create a roadmap of planet formation using supercomputers.

"This investigation will use powerful computers to produce simulations of planet formation and compare the results with modern observations," said Lyra. "This research will be able to decide which models are more likely to account for planet formation."

'Something went wrong.' Some astronomers feel left out of European road map | Science | AAAS

A 2008 Astronet road map called for the Extremely Large Telescope. Some astronomers are upset by the group's latest effort.

But some are unhappy with what the draft plan left out—particularly in radio and gamma ray astronomy, as well as the study of high-energy particles from space. "Something went wrong," says Leonid Gurvits, a radio astronomer at the Delft University of Technology. "It's not anyone's intention, it just happened in this unfortunate way." Astronet organizers say the drafts were not intended to be exhaustive and later revisions will reflect the roughly 200 comments received before a 1 May deadline.

Australia's space sector was worth $4.8 billion in 2018-19 , and accounted for almost 10,000 jobs. This is only likely to increase in coming years, with the government committing $13.3 million in the 2021-22 Federal Budget to increase the capacity of the Australian Space Agency.

The goal of the Australian Rover Challenge is to grow capability, increase networking opportunities and create an event where spectators can view space challenges up close, said John Culton , Director of the Andy Thomas Centre for Space Resources and Associate Professor at the University of Adelaide’s School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering .
