A full-moon paddle can be delightful, even without the moon - Portland Press Herald

CAPE ELIZABETH — Waterbirds, a purple sunset, crashing ocean waves and a clear, starlit night drew three paddlers to the Spurwink River in late May.

Who cares if we never saw the moon rise a day after the full moon? (Our excursion was postponed by one night because of thunderstorms.) Who cares that we timed the launch too close to the turning tide and had to push our water crafts through inches of water and mud on the first leg of the paddle? We had researched our course with veteran paddlers – and knew the hazards.

NASA's Juno mission has been observing Jupiter and its moons since July 2016, and now Juno will come within 645 miles (1,038 kilometers) of Ganymede's surface.

It's the closest a spacecraft has been to the moon since the Galileo spacecraft made its approach in May 2000. At 3,270 miles across (5,262.4 kilometers), this giant moon is larger than the planet Mercury.

Cholera 'Forever Destroyed' U.N.'s Image in Haiti, Ban Ki-moon Says - The New York Times

Respect for the United Nations in Haiti was "forever destroyed" by the cholera epidemic that ravaged the impoverished country after the 2010 earthquake, the leader of the global organization during that period said in a new book.

But he also expressed disdain for Haiti's leaders — particularly its president at the time of the quake and cholera outbreak, René Préval, whom he described as lost, panicked and paralyzed.

To The Moon! What Challenges Does NASA's 2024 Lunar Mission Face?

NASA has big plans for returning American astronauts to the moon. However, in our reviews of the agency's efforts, we've discovered a number of challenges and obstacles that NASA must address in order to meet its planned timeline for these missions.

NASA was already working to return astronauts to the moon by 2028 when, 2 years ago, the White House directed NASA to speed up plans to 2024 instead.

Sun, moon to create ‘ring of fire’ Thursday morning | Robesonian

Almost four years ago, we were treated to the nearly total eclipse of the sun on Aug. 21, 2017. Hopefully, you acquired a set of eclipse glasses to safely view this stellar event.

Ideally, you safely stored those glasses in a cool, dry place so they could be used again. Before you put them on and look at the sun, some safety checks are in order. Look at the lenses. Are they scratched, holey, or otherwise not pristine? When you look at a bright lamp through the glasses, does any light leak through? If either of these conditions are true, dispose of the glasses properly. They are unsafe.
